Drones Target Kisangani Airport, Blamed on Rebels & Rwanda

Drone's targeted the airport in Kiesengani, a key city in Northeast Democratic Republic of Congo, far from the main fighting in the east. Local officials blame the AFC-slash M23 rebel group and neighboring Rwanda for the attack on Sunday. The rebels, who UN experts say get support from Rwanda, control large areas in eastern Congo, including cities like Goma and Bukavu after a big push. Last year, they claimed the airport has been used before to strike their positions and civilians. Witnesses heard explosions and gunfire near the airport that afternoon, causing staff, vendors, and residents to run for cover. Four kamikaze drones got shot down as the passenger plane was about to land, with no reported damage or injuries. Airport operations restarted that evening, but it's unclear if any other drones actually hit their marks. The provincial governor has not commented yet.
