But for now, it's time to go back in time with today in history.

Today in history.

All right, everybody.

We're going back to 1963.

El año 63 and we had Alcatraz.

Or as you probably say in Spain, Alcatraz.

Closing its doors on this day.

The prison in San Francisco closed down.

And they transferred their last prisoners out.

Now at its peak in the 1950s.

The rock.

Or America's devil island.

Housed over 200 inmates.

In Carcelados, right?

200 inmates.

And a maximum security facility.

Alcatraz remained an icon of American prisons for its harsh conditions.

It's going to be honest.

Duros de fetheles, harsh conditions.

And a record for being inescapable.

It was a 12-acre rocky island.

One and a half miles from San Francisco.

And it had the most advanced security at the time.

Some of the first metal detectors were used in Alcatraz.

Strict rules were enforced against the unfortunate inmates who had to do time there.

They had nearly complete silence mandated.

It was terrible, really.

And it was first explored by Juan Manuel de Ayala.

In 1775.

And he called it Isla de los Alcatrazes.

The Pelicans.

Pelican Island. Alcatrazes.

Yes.

Because the Pelicans lived there.

And it was sold in 1849 to the US government.

The first lighthouse in California was on Alcatraz.

And it became a Civil War fort.

And then later a military prison in 1907.

Now, the end of its prison days did not end the Alcatraz story, though.

In March of 1964 a group of Sue natives claimed that the island belonged to them.

Because of an old treaty.

A hundred-year-old treaty.

And their claims were ignored until November of 1969 when a group of 98 Native Americans,

representing the American Indian movement, occupied the island.

And they stayed there until 1971 when AIM was finally forced off the island by federal authorities.

The following year Alcatraz was added to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

And it's now open for tourism.

There you go, so you can go see it as a tourist.

Alcatraz.

Of course, the famous movie.

That was...

There was an old movie from the 70s, Escape from Alcatraz.

I think it was Clint Eastwood in that one.

I'm going to have to check who was in it, folks.

The ultimate fate of Frank Morris and the Anglin Brothers remains a mystery.

But the determination of their daring escape continues to captivate.

People say, oh my gosh, more.

Yes, we also have an interesting thing that happened on this day in 1980,

which was the United States boycotting the Olympics.

This was the Moscow Olympics, right?

In Moscow.

He's a Moscow.

Yeah, it was the American president, Jimmy Carter.

He announced that the United States would not attend the summer Olympics held in Moscow that of that year.

Now, the decision came after the Soviet Union intervened in Afghanistan

to support an unstable pro-Soviet government.

And the United States reacted quickly and sharply.

It suspended arms negotiations with the Soviets and decided to boycott the games.

Yes, and the president met with 150 US athletes and coaches to explain his decision.

A lot of the athletes were devastated by the news, declaring that the president was politicizing the Olympics.

Ultimately, the decision had no impact on Soviet policy in Afghanistan, but it did tarnish.

Let's say the prestige or prestige heel of the Olympic Games in Moscow.

It was also the first time that this cold war diplomacy insinuated itself into international sport.

The Soviet Union had refused to play in Chile in 1973 in the World Cup, the FIFA World Cup in 1973.

A fascinating place with a very interesting history.

Here are a few facts about Alcatraz.

Well, Alcatraz was the home to some of the most infamous criminals in American history, including Al Capone, George Kelly.

They called him machine gun Kelly and Robert Stroud, who was known as the Birdman of Alcatraz, operating as a federal prison from 1934 to 63.

It was known for its inescapable facilities.

It was surrounded by cold, turbulent waters around San Francisco.

Notice how here I can say surrounded by the cold waters of San Francisco, Las Aguas, Frías.

Alcatraz was designed to hold the most difficult prisoners, those who had caused trouble in other prisons.

And its isolation made it a symbol of punishment and hopelessness for people within its walls.

Or was it one of the most compelling mysteries around Alcatraz is the 1962 escape attempt by Frank Morris

and John and Clarence Anglin.

They crafted a plan involving fake heads, made of paper mache, to deceive guards, and a makeshift raft.

Interesting.

So I have to watch that movie.

Now, there's also a very, now, if you think of just the island, not just the, not just the prison, the famous prison, but the island itself also has a very rich Native American history.

It was used by Native American tribes as a place of exile and isolation.

And during the Native American civil rights movement, it became a symbol of resistance, as I mentioned before, a group of activists occupied the island for 19 months to protest.

The U.S. is policies, federal policies of ownership of the island, and they, and to reclaim it.

They call it the occupation of Alcatraz, which brought a lot of attention to Native American issues, and it remains an important moment in their fight for sovereignty and rights.

It was also, like I said, before a military fortress, before being a prison, military fortress and a detention facility.

During the mid 19th century, it was equipped with cannons and fortifications to guard San Francisco Bay against potential invaders.

And during the Civil War, it housed Confederate sympathizers and other prisoners of war.

By the, by the early 20th century, it's military role faded, and it became really an ideal location, a perfect location for a, for a prison, a high security prison.

You know, it's close to San Francisco, a big population nearby, but being out in the water, they could be isolated and they could be secure and they could be, you know, kept away from, from society.

But still close. Now, it's also a sanctuary for wildlife. It's also a haven for seabirds, rocky cliffs, and are a great place for seabirds.

There are a lot of gals, coroments, and snowy egrids, the well different types of birds that live in and around the island, or on and around the island, I should say.

So it's more than just a prison. It's a place with a lot of history and an interesting island, just a couple miles off the shore of California near near San Francisco.

Anyway, we've got, I think we need to cover a little vocabulary. We haven't done any of that yet today. Why don't we take a look at today's vocabulary?
