Doyon Rig Dismantling: Oil Spill Contained

Crews are pushing forward with this mantling the Dooyan 26 oil rig that tipped over on Alaska's north slope back in January. The operation is now in phase two of three, according to the latest update from the team in charge. The Unified Command overseeing everything includes reps from Dooyan Drilling, the Environmental Protection Agency, Alaska's Department of Environmental. Conservation, the north slope burrow, and the inupiate community of the Arctic slope. So far, the spill's impact has stayed contained, with no oil escaping the rig structure into the environment. That keeps risks low for the sensitive area up there. Teams check two tanks inside the rig and pour out 515 gallons of hydraulic oil from an undamaged one for safe disposal. They also spotted 135 gallons that leaked from a damaged tank. Plans are moving ahead to recover that leaked oil as soon as it's safe. This bumps the total spill estimate to 4735 gallons, with no other tanks left in the rig.
