DMC Boys: Indigenous Rock from Doomadgee

0:00Reporting from The Daily News, now, I'm Cory with the latest in Sydney, in the remote Aboriginal community of DumaGee, nearly 1,000 kilometers west of Cairns in Outback Queensland, a group of young men has formed. The DMC Boys band. These childhood friends make up a six-piece group, blending indigenous rock and reggae sounds. They release their debut EP, called You Girl The People, Back in February, with songs drawn from ganglid stories sung in both their traditional. The band started about two years ago when lead singer Elijah Douglas had lyrics stuck in his head that became their first single, Pelican. Most members, including bassist Jeffrey DumaGee and drummer Ashley DumaGee, had never played instruments before. They picked it up quickly in the local youth hubs recording studio. Musician Dale Mallet became a key mentor after visiting for workshops in 2019. He runs the Dream Time music project with the Community Council and helped turn their

1:00ideas into tracks. They even traveled to the Sunshine Coast last year to mix the EP. Locals in DumaGee, a town of under 1,500 people, welcomed the band home like stars, with cheers and signs at the airport. They performed in nearby spots like Burt Town and feel supported by their community. Now the DMC Boys are working on another EP and a full album for release this year. They planned to head to Mornington Island to mentor other young musicians, just like they were guided, and keep sharing their unique sound to inspire.
