Adam and Allison Podcast — DM Dilemma: meet trash can "Tara". Machine-transcribed; use the interactive transcript above to jump the player to any line.
On time for a DM dilemma, what do you think trash can Tara should do? This is a situation she's in with her neighbor. Do you guys think I'm being a bad neighbor? She writes, I've lived at my apartment for a year and a half. And I'm friendly with two of my next door neighbors and the neighbor across from me. My apartment offers a trash service where you leave your trash and it's designated trash can overnight and somebody will come pick it up. But there are a lot of rules and one of my neighbors had their trash can't taken away because they kept breaking the rules. Now they will just put their trash in any neighboring trash can, including mine. You never asked if you could do this and I'm not comfortable with it. I've talked to the other neighbors though and no one else seems to mind. Am I being too much of a rule follower or would I be a bad neighbor if I reported him to the front office? It's stories like these that make me so relieved that I'm not friends with any of my neighbors and I don't want to be friends with any of my neighbors. So I don't know that I can really help you with if you're being a bad neighbor
because I like being a bad neighbor and I would not, I would absolutely report my neighbor if they started putting their trash in my trash can. Sounds like you're being super, super specific with the rules here. And I think that that wouldn't make you a bad neighbor. You are a bad neighbor and I don't know why you wouldn't want to be friends with your neighbors because yes or anybody. I made two of my best friends in my entire life that I'm still friends with to this day. I only like lived close to them for a year or two, but I still talk to them almost every weekend or so anytime I go up to that part of the country, I make sure I make time to visit with them. So yeah, I think it would be I'm glad that I have those friends in Tara. I think you're going to want to remain friends with your neighbor. Like I think it would just be good for you. I don't know. Can I ask, would it have warranted a conversation or would you have just turned a blind eye to it? If you were in a similar situation with these neighbors that you're now
friends with where all of a sudden their trash can got taken away and they wanted to be able to use the trash service just like you and they never asked, but they just started putting their trash in your trash can. Would you talk to them at all about it? Or would you just go, you know what, I don't care where friends that would be, I would not expect them to have to ask me because we're friends. 601 995 101 7 call or text in your advice. Shonda says, what happens when you lose your privileges as well? Well, here's the thing, Shonda, I do think you can have a conversation like, hey, just don't get my trash can taken away from me. Like make sure you follow the rules that I'll have a problem with it. If not, but yeah, why not? But you just said if it was your friends, you wouldn't have even had a conversation with them. Well, okay, maybe, maybe I'd be like, no, I would assume that my friends wouldn't break the rules for me. I kind of feel bad about the name we gave our DMer this morning. Oops, he's that was my bad. I picked it trash can.
Terrell, we're not calling her a trash can. That's just what her DM's all about. A little bit of a sticky situation between her and a neighbor. Yeah, neighbor lost his valet trash privileges. The company took away the trash can that he could normally just leave his trash outside and somebody comes and picks it up. So the neighbor has remedied this situation by just picking an open trash can that's on the floor and then leaving his trash in there. Terrell is like, I don't really feel good about this, but the other neighbors don't care. Right. And she's like made friends out of her neighbors, not looking to make enemies, but she doesn't like that this rule breaker is now breaking the rules and making her an accomplice. I kind of think that Tara should just look at this as her way to stick it to the man. Oh, okay. Like the your apartment company is the man. Right. And so if you're, if you're, you know, pulling the wool over their eyes a little bit, that should make you feel good.
Maybe that's what you need to tell yourself. I mean, it would not make me feel good. I don't want to be friends with my neighbors. The idea makes my skin crawl. And so I certainly would be mad if one of my neighbors started doing this to me, but like you talking about sticking it to the apartment complex is so interesting because is he also kind of brought up that point? Like she was like, I wouldn't want my privileges revoked because he's using my trash and possibly breaking the rules with me. But she says that how she would handle it is to like leave a no asking that like maybe he doesn't do that with your trash. And then it can prove to the office that people taking away someone's garbage privileges does affect other residents and they need a better system. This text just came in. It says she should approach the neighbor and tell them they will split the trash fee if they are going to continue to use her trash can. That's a part I didn't even think about. Yeah, I'd be like, if you want to use my trash, that's fine. But give me $20 a month or 15 or whatever it is ashes on your side.
I can't believe more people are not on my side wanting to keep the peace with the neighbors and well, but I think we're in a narrow where less people are friends with their neighbors. Like I assume all my neighbors are pretty much up to no good all the time. So this is why you're so miserable. I mean, I'm serious. You just said you're constantly looking at people like they're the worst human in the world. Like they're the enemy. How do you live like that? I very well. Once I'm in my house with my dog, I'm very happy. Not me, man. I want my head in the clouds. I want it to be sunny and 75 24, 7365.
