DLSS 5 Is DIVIDING The Gaming Community
About this episode
We're back from GDC and I've got A LOT to unpack. This week on Spawn On Me. I'm diving deep into everything that had the internet buzzing coming out of the Game Developers Conference.
First up: Project Helix. Xbox finally confirmed the name, the hardware direction, and what their partnership with AMD really means for the future — FSR Next, machine learning integration, a custom AMD SOC, and yes… it IS a console. Then I get into the DLSS 5 controversy that has the gaming community split right down the middle. Is NVIDIA's latest AI upscaling tech a game-changer or a line that shouldn't have been crossed?
Plus — GDC sleeper hit alert. I got hands-on with a 90's nostalgia brawler that nobody saw coming, and it might be one of the most exciting indie games of the year. Think Double Dragon meets Scott Pilgrim with Demolition Manenergy.

I have been really excited for a couple of different reasons one because you know new hardware is always something that I want to be excited about I'm always hyped for new hardware it's always dope to be able to see the companies kind of come together and seeing xbox now you know say the thing out loud uh asha Sharma this new CEO uh shared a couple weeks ago the name of the project the name of the new hardware and you know one of the things that I came back from all of the discussions were you know did this feel like something that was you know something that we hadn't heard before did this feel like new information that really didn't get surfaced before and I think the the cool part about what we found in the discussion during the gdc talk was there wasn't a ton of new information but it was and it was a mix of information that we kind of already knew but it was great to get confirmation on a lot of different stuff and I think there was some major takeaways that
came through uh during the the conversation and during the talk that I think were important I want to I want to read some of those things from our friends over at day one uh who who definitely go check out their work and go check out their site they're really good synopsis of the discussion in the talk there and it talked about kind of the major pieces of that discussion which were fsr next which I think is something that we've all been trying to figure out what the heck is going to happen with the partnership with xbox and AMD and we got a much broader discussion point with that coming around and saying oh wow we are not going to see um them use their newest version of fsr on the new hardware which is going to be a hybrid of the pc and xbox ecosystems um that was already pretty much confirmed in multiple ways over multiple articles during multiple people having that discussion and it was great to be able to get you know a doubling down of what that of what that was going to wind up being um you know they talked about fsr next uh being a part of
project helix it's talk about more ml more machine learning being a part of this new uh console they made a really big uh emphasis on saying console uh I think a lot of folks going into that week we're wondering what this is going to be are they're going to talk about it in those ways are they actually going to discuss it and say the word console because everybody seems to be freaking out about the word console versus pc uh and we got you know a more uh emphasis on the word and the terminology around what that was which is it is going to be a console it's going to have a custom AMD SOC so silicon on chip uh which again confirms that this is more console like or at least going to be digging into the more console layers of what we see from a hardware perspective in those ways so again it's going to be rendering and simulation in a lot of different um uh works in terms of backwards compatibility and it's going to be something where we're going to see uh you know this continuous and continuing partnership between those brands uh be really important for the
rest of where they're trying to go which I am very excited for because everything that I've played with in that ecosystem has felt very very good um let's see the the other big thing that I think was important was a doubling down of xbox mode xbox mode if you're using the xbox rock ally x you have an understanding of what that is that is going to be also coming to the pc in april it is this consolidated UI interface where you are going to be able to quickly get between the games that you're playing across multiple different stores and store fronts uh with um uh you know kind of a push of a button kind of thing it's more of like a steam uh big picture mode that is going to be balancing the the the two ecosystems of the windows platform and the xbox platform I've been a big fan of it it's worked extremely well every time I've used it on my omarrogic ally x my x rog xbox rog ally x it has worked extremely well um and I've not really had
any complaints about uh any of those things uh for my time of using it it's always been really fun that's going to be coming to pc in april alongside a discussion around initial kind of dev kit so at least the idea around dev hardware being given to uh some of the parties moving forward around that time too so we're probably going to see this confluence of that will when you won't see it because it'll be behind closed doors but I figure if you're going to say that new hardware for devs are going to be coming out around that time and I usually winds up being something where first party studios will get their first hands on the hardware to start building out new titles for the xbox platform and then later on you'll see a rolling out of different um uh uh kinds of hardware to other studios who will then be also trying to make games for the xbox platform I am really excited for the future of xbox I think
what they've done here is really smart I think they've gotten out front and put asha Sharma out and had her talk about you know where we're going as a company what they're trying to do as a brand how they're looking to get back to the emphasis of making great things for gamers alongside that you also have uh the discussion from Jason Ronald and what the hardware is going to be starting to do there's a lot of mixes and matches of things that are going to be happening over the next year um but for me I think that's going to wind up kind of culminating in us seeing something in the beginning of next year at least more conversations so when I first saw the information come through a lot of my initial discussion point was if devs are going to be getting dev kits towards April that means to me that much later in the year or at least even mid year next year
is when we're going to start to see your hardware be revealed so I'm gonna get more conversations around what it's going to be we'll probably definitely start to get conversations around pricing usually and the internet got mad at me for saying all this stuff because they were like they put out gay gay dev kits out in 2010 and then in like no vent no like in uh the mid mid 2010 and then towards the end of the year they had the hardware out I think they have to be extremely careful in terms of messaging which they have not gotten right in the past previous iterations of stuff to the pricing is going to have to be really really important and the reason why I keep thinking that things are going to get pushed out a little bit further than not is one they're going to be paying a huge amount of attention to the markets because we've seen uh uh ram prices go through the roof you've seen storage prices go through the roof so they're going to be trying to hedge their bets as much as they can to be able to get a good deal and good pricing on some of that stuff even though you have to do that fairly far in advance right so that's one two the 25th
Paris Paris Lee in the chat uh who was flying uh around somewhere in the world trying to burn people's food across the nation uh share the 25th anniversary uh is the hardware reveal which makes a ton of sense um alongside that also again there isn't really going to be as big of a rush to this next generation as we've seen in the previous iteration and previous generation I think this next generation is going to be the longest wait between folks who have been on the fence about do they want new hardware or do they want to wait until they can get new software I mean that software get new hardware on a new box I think more people are going to wait and and stand pat with the stuff that they already have and wait a long time for reviews for hardware tech reviews for for reviews from influencers and from uh people who who are getting the hardware seeded to them to be able to showcase what the hardware is going to wind up doing this is going to
be a lot of discussion points around how those things are going to work together when they're kind of moving between the Xbox platform and between the PC platform so I think a lot of people are not going to be first um uh first adopters as fast as they were in previous previous gents I think it's going to happen on both boxes I think it's going to happen on the plate on the PlayStation and on the Xbox I think both they're going to take their time or fans are going to take their time it's going to be folks we're going to get things day one because those folks always want to get things day one but I think we're going to see a much bigger and much broader swath of players kind of wait a bit for some of this hardware to kind of manifest and mature and and be you know get the full monty of all those things that are in that oh and of course you know in the marketing space you usually want a full year to be able to do that work for getting the messaging out showcasing what the hardware can do getting your marketing campaigns together so that's the reason why I'm thinking it's going to be much later in 2027 and I think most folks are saying with that previous
iteration for what that's going to wind up being I do think they're going to have to do a ton of work of building out the case for why you want that thing and for why it makes sense to get it now as opposed to later um which is a hard thing for them to do again they're still you know looking their wounds from a generation that is now seen Phil Spencer retire we've seen Sarah Bond leave um and they're still trying to get their feet underneath them with this new leadership run by Asha Sharma and Matt Booty kind of running through as being the new faces of the brand in a much bigger way I'm happy that they showed what they showed it wasn't a big surprise I think it was a lot of us in the room who had very calm expectations for what the news was even though the internet did what the internet does all the time and blows everything out of proportion but it was a really good showing initial showing from Jason Ronald and the rest of the team during that week to be able to get people in a good space to be able to talk about it and there
were some fantastic games in the showcase that they had a little bit later in that day that I that I got a chance to play as well that we're talking about in the what we've been playing segment of the show so excited for Project Helix I'm excited to see what they're where they go and and and if this is the new logo for for where they're going who knows it'll be interesting to see what the naming convention will wind up being but I think um getting that initial information in the in the hopper is great for everybody um next story is the Saudi Arabian government has now moved their amount of stake in Capcom from 5% to 10% so they now own 10% of Capcom's the Saudi Arabia fund uh acquires even more of one of our favorite companies one has been doing a ton of great work Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salim uh I'm sorry Salman uh electron a gaming development company the EGDC has acquired another 5% stake in the company I think the reason I bring this up
is because the team has gotten some really great wins from the games they've been putting out and and a couple of games that we have been playing as well street fright has been doing extremely well Resident Evil 9 has been a masterpiece and has blown people out of the water everyone is really excited about Proc Mata they have a ton of really good will in the space but it feels like there's still this clawing of the Saudi Arabian government or at least this specific fund that anytime we talk about it it winds up bringing again some negative vibes to the space because of all of the human rights issues that we've seen over the decades with the government there I think that we will wind up seeing now with them owning even more stake here in Capcom which is putting together or has one of the biggest fighting games in the planet we saw earlier in the year then put up and basically start to own evo which is the biggest fighting game um tournament in the planet um you know now they're they're they've been trying to get a
a bigger stake or buy uh they purchased um EA or uh let's see they begin on a money into EA take to EA Activision Blizzard um and almost all of SNK as well uh they had been talks about raising money for Ubisoft as well so the Saudi government has been putting their hands into many many pots in the gaming space and it is changing the ways that we think about lots of the pieces around ownership you know in a in a in a industry where funding has become very very skate uh is hard to find good funding now for your game and seeing now with the big pockets of funding are coming from players that are external to the US especially for uh western games that tells you a lot about where things are moving from a funding perspective you have 10 cent which
you know the Chinese held company that owns a ton of different stakes in a lot of different organizations and companies there now the Saudi government is taking their hand into that as well and it winds up being something where I do wonder if there will be some potential holding of your wallet to kind of buck against the idea of places that are you know supposedly against the United States being spots that if you may not necessarily want to you know divulge or put their money into um it will be something where the Trump administration will probably definitely get into this in some form of fashion because of their ties to the Saudi government they will probably buck against the the Chinese layers other because we've been continuously talking and fighting with with China um but the tariffs that have been imposed which have been getting getting pushed and pulled are now again rearing their ugly heads in a different way where are we going to be able to compete from a development perspective when a lot of eastern companies
are putting out really fantastic games they're doing them in concert with um other organizations that have been putting out great work and they have been you know getting more space to kind of move in a direction that is not just the uh square enus because of the world anymore we're seeing a lot of really fantastic development coming out of that space and if that changes what winds up happening for the future of game creation in a real way there's going to be a real discussion about like how do you then you know do that dance with those companies if you need to to make to make sure you can get your game out or even to get your game made now so that's going to be a really big discussion point I think moving forward it wasn't one that I really heard in GDC I think over overall the discussion at GDC was a baseline of we can't find funding for games we want to make and the thing that was the hardest was hearing that from veterans who had been making games with games folks had made games over multiple years had made multiple titles and those folks being
not being able to find funding for games that usually would be home runs off the off the bat right like those folks usually get a good nod to be able to do some of that work pretty easily um seeing that that has now changed in a big monumental way um gives not only me pause but it wants to changing the entire landscape of who gets money where does that money come from do you feel like that money is dirty and if you do feel like it's dirty what do you do about that um so that's going to be a very very interesting discussion point moving forward for Capcom and the rest of the industry uh last news story for this episode of Sponomi is all about DLSS 5 and everyone losing their crap about what looks to be this encroachment on the artistic uh divide between the
artist and the player or at least the artist in technology so in a uh it uh the latest Nvidia conference or at least in the last Nvidia talk uh Jensen's Wong um a CEO of Nvidia showcased DLSS 5 which is this new part of the technology pipeline for Nvidia GPUs where if you've been playing on PC for a long period of time you're super familiar with it is a machine learning uh algorithm alongside some other tech that helps to do things like frame generation that will help you play your games at a lower uh high end not a lower high end at a lower cost of performance on your on your PC to be able to uh you know get more frames better frame rate uh you know
being able to take some of that pull off of the hardware itself and kind of move it into a software software environment um and we've had multiple versions of DLSS over the years I think it has been really really cool I think a lot of folks have been excited for it and been happy for it because it does make the process of playing games at the highest resolution a ton easier but with this particular showcase this through everybody for a big loop for multiple reasons one you know if you're looking at this and you know the video version of the show the the before and after shots that they showcased are pretty jarring I think anyone who is looking at it with the discussion and points that have come up over the past couple of years around the uh uh a proliferation of gen a gen a i genera i and seeing how bad so many of those um you know showcases of of videos and
pictures have been alongside having a conversation about how all this technology is stealing from artists alongside your discussion around artists uh visions being kind of trampled on by this kind of by this kind of technology the internet was not happy uh when the discussion came up and when it's got shared you know across my social media feeds everyone was dog pile in this thing with the utmost memes and everyone going yuck and and screw this and we don't want this and all the stuff is terrible and all the stuff is the is the worst thing on the planet and uh you know jensen came back and fired back and said that one one of the concerns was is it's actually changing the art of what's being made in these games from the people who are making it um and jensen said he said the gamers are complaining that the technology is adding uh adding a layer of basically
what feels like a beauty filter from what people are saying um and he said that is a completely wrong statement he said that the reason for that is because and he's explained very carefully dlss 5 fuses controllability of the geometry and textures and everything about the game with genitive a i he said that it is still leaving the creative control to the artist which i think is a extremely important thing to discuss he says constant control um doesn't change the artist's artist's control it is not post processing which a lot of people have said these are like AI filters said it's not post processing at the frame level it's generative control at the geometry level Huang said so i i love two minds when it comes to this thing one i think i always get a little frustrated at the way the internet gets matted everything instantly i think every former technology that we've
come to to see in the past 10 to 15 years has gone through iterations of kind of working through what feels good versus what doesn't feel good and i think the ability to see something be made and you may not necessarily vibe with it i think there's always a very visceral reaction to everything in a way that is unnecessary and detrimental and honest i think there's a balance of all of those things within that discussion when i saw this the thing i tweeted was i don't like the way it visually represents in some of the examples that they showed because it does really look like a wild paint brush being put over what the artists were giving or what the artist had made but in that same light it depends to me on where does that get applied what genre of title or game it might work for
and two things can the artists turn it off can he disable it and three i think that was a number um this is a technology that has traditionally been something that players don't have to engage with you don't have to use it and to be this mad for a thing that you don't have to use makes makes me not understand why everybody is so upset everybody is so mad at everything all the time without engaging with things now there were some parts of this that that were we're not great like the resident evil stuff like the hog warts stuff even the the starfield stuff looked a little bit weird at the uncanny valley in a in a really not great way didn't work but i said there is some genres of games that i've seen for multiple years have issues or at least to me when you're talking about photorealistic graphics that this potentially could be a good thing for of course again we all
understand the environmental cost of all of this technology these are things that we have been fighting against and fighting you know to raise awareness for for multiple years i still don't see people boycotting in the video i still don't see people boycotting any of these companies that are putting generative AI or working in machine learning spaces which again is different than generative AI but people still buying cards people still doing the work they're still playing and still using the stuff but they're not they're not mad at it until they see this stuff on their screen what is bothersome to me is the fact that i think in sports titles this would be really really worth checking out i know as a person who plays NBA 2k as a person who plays wwe 2k often those specific games in particular have always had this weird issue where i want the fidelity to be as photorealistic as possible and it doesn't feel like they hit the mark there is an artistic layer to that and i
think that that's important to recognize but we have seen over the years this technology is going to grow it is going to get better it is going to get refined it is going to look different it is going to change in a way that wants to begin these first iterations are using nowhere near where we wind up getting to a year or two out the technology is moving extremely fast for all of those things right and i think if we're going to do that thing then we can at least be able to pick at the thing and say hey we understand what you're trying to do the parts of this we don't like voicing your opinion is extremely important everyone is doing that now in the ways that that makes sense but we demify everything immediately we also don't engage with things because of i feel like there's a bit of you know i don't want to be that person who's in my friend group who will say a thing out loud because i don't want to be ostracized because i don't want people to think
that i am a fan of a thing that feels gross or feels like it is again trampling on artistic vision or any of those things i do want to hear more from developers about what this looks like for them i do want to hear about if this makes their workflows a little bit better i do want to see the conversation around what this is in terms of what aspects of this do make sense versus what don't i think again i think some of the background images look better some of those moments look a little different and i think it has an ability to work in a way that may potentially be really good the thing that is going to be really weird is seeing it in motion i think a lot of these before and after is start off in a moment where you're seeing it in motion it does a freeze frame you see the change in the visuals and then it goes back into something else that goes back to being in motion i think motion is where all these things are going to wind up being extremely difficult um again
that's where the technology is is still new enough to be able to showcase where it is going and where it has become or where it's gone and where it's going to wind up going we don't know yet but i think we will see you know games potentially use it in some ways that might be useful again the bigger the game the more detail you want it losing at scale maybe this is a thing that helps to kind of make that better in those ways and again i think a lot of folks who are going to be um talking about the technology are still conflating machine learning with generative AI and i think that that's always been a problem with the discussion um again uh i think a lot of folks are going to poo poo on something and never try it but i also feel like we do this thing in the space where we continuously shit on everything and to be fair you don't have to use it most people don't hear most people don't hear don't even have a 50 jet uh 50 series card you won't even be able to use it because 50 cards are crazy expensive right now a 50 80 is 1500 bucks a 50 90's almost four
grand i looked at prices up this morning because i was like i wonder if the prices are are still getting uh so crazy you're not going to be able to do half the stuff that you complain about so winds up being this thing where it just feels like a lot of bluster all the time when people are hating on technology and they hate it on every version of technology that we've seen in a gaming space for a long period of time and now this is another thing to throw on the pile when technology is getting faster technology is getting different uh is getting more robust in a lot of different ways and i think this is going to be an extension of what we wind up seeing and i do think some of the stuff is going to creep into the consoles that we're going to see in the future like pssr 2.0 just came out today which is another machine learning algorithm that is going to be doing some of this work to sharpen and to to give you more frames and to give you a better fidelity thing like everyone is using this technology in some form or fashion you're just not potentially seeing it in the same ways and it's going to be something where it's going to be under the hood so much that you're not even going to think about it when it gets to that level two to three years
from now so i i appreciate the fact that people are standing up for the artist which we we should all do standing up for people not losing their jobs which you should all do but again people complain and fuss about a thing but they're going to use it they're good i don't see people in mass being like i'm never going to use this technology as making this thing that i want to play that much easier to play or that much better looking when people still complain about the uncanny valley and wanting to move away from visual aesthetic and stylized artistic views but like this isn't going to work on a game that's like mouse PI right like it won't work on some of that stuff you won't even use it for that stuff you're looking for photorealism and if stylized art doesn't isn't going for realism in those ways so i don't think this kills the baby in his crib but i do think it gives another option for things that are the places that are most lifelike your most human like will get a bump in texture resolution or get a bump in visual fidelity in a way that might be kind of cool but we crap on everything so then we don't
get a chance to see it in there and again and video is going to move forward without us or not they're not going to not do it it just makes sense for them in a business model perspective but it will then be on you as a consumer to decide if you actually want to engage with it learn about it and understand it or just turtle and say this is all terrible because they look like they put a i-fail to run it i don't understand that it doesn't make sense to me um but we've seen that be the the telltale thing for for multiple people in multiple ways all over the place so i'm like okay that's cool and all but it doesn't really do anything in the in the in the in the grand scheme um we're going to take a quick break uh and talk more about stuff that i've been playing which has been so good i've been playing a ton of dope stuff this past week and over the past couple of weeks um and it have just been blowing through games and trying to get through games because they have been coming in hot and heavy left and right all over the place i'm very excited
to get to our next segment but we're going to take a quick two-minute break hang out thank everybody in the chat for coming through thank you all for listening at home and we'll be right back after this hey there my name is Naomi and you might know me from internet things like hosting for IGN i'd like to introduce you to my new show this week and gaming it's 20 minutes short and sweet and every week i go through all the important gaming news that you need to know and then we have folks on like caliph atoms who shows up quite often talk about all the important news and you get to listen to it wherever you get your podcast so it's easy to find just look for this weekend gaming and make sure to give it a follow and every week monday at 9 p.m. time to get a brand new episode i hope you'll join me first up on what we've been playing for this episode of spawn on me i got the pleasure to go over to
the capcom offices in san francisco to go play a couple of fantastic titles that we know are coming up first up i got a chance to check out a new run a new build of pragmata pragmata is the capcom game where you are this gentleman who is ushering in kind of you know keeping this young girl safe who has these kind of robot powers and it's like almost a small wonder if you remember that show from the early 90s and you know it's this kind of puzzle based action action game which is really really fun i got a chance to play some of it earlier in at some games fast a couple uh maybe a year ago um and i've been waiting to see more about what this game is going to wind up being and every time i come to it it feels even better it feels super fun it feels fast it feels
interesting there's a lot of really dope nuanced kind of of gameplay elements to it um and we got a chance to play this thing for about two hours or so um playing a new level where we got a chance to check out uh this like really dope boss fight uh where you're kind of unlocking these six levels throughout your run and then heading to this much bigger space to fight this fight this boss i know a lot of folks have been wondering about like is this game going to be dope is it going to be fun you know do people really dig it is it going to be something where we're going to have a chance to to really you know connect with the character in a way that feels good you know graphically it is beautiful it is stunning it is one of the best looking Capcom games and Capcom continues to have you know really smart and fun elements to what they bring to the table i think what always makes me excited is getting a chance to see games um early but also getting a
chance to be able to play through some of the you know earlier builds where you're kind of getting your your your your wits about you about how you want to kind of tackle these uh particular encounters and it was it being something where the balance between gameplay and between um story has been really fun to watch kind of happen um at first i was thinking like oh well you know this is going to be one of those kind of budget Capcom games that doesn't really have a lot of legs to it um but getting to see not only the the visual storytelling and how they are building upon this new world where you're in this section of the game where you're in this kind of faux New York um and having to balance out combat with uh this kind of puzzle element is really cool i've not seen a game like this yet i think they've done a really fun job of bringing together a ton of different elements that that
speak to how you make a game like this and you can see like when you're fighting these these robots um your whole kind of uh uh role is to piece together a route to get to the ending of a sequence in between those sequences they have these different nodes that can give you buffs give you abilities to do more damage give you uh abilities to heal to do other parts of um combat that aren't just normal shooting so when you want to getting to a part where you have ended out the loop of uh a node you then take down and or open up a piece of that enemy's body to reveal a soft spot that you're able to do more damage on the the bots that you're shooting um each each weapon has multiple shooting uh or almost has multiple shooting abilities but what you're trying to do is
combine the elements of weapons that you have because you usually have three that you can choose from and one you know is potentially trying to lock down an area where you want to do some area of effect kind of damage another could be um like almost like a sniper where you're using it to to do like pinpoint damage that goes through multiple enemies there are somewhere uh you're looking to use like almost a stasis kind of weapon on some of the the bots that you wind up seeing I'm going to fast forward through some of the footage to get you to uh the the big part but there are these multiple weird super weird enemies I'm like half babies have have humans like really weird elements of design where it's not like um a from software-esque kind of vibe but capcom has done a really good job of course you know with their pedigree of um uh a resident evil kinds of enemies and all
those kinds of things where they've done a really good job of balancing out creepy and interesting and fun and you know um kind of breakneck almost decision making that you have to do while having these these fights it wants it making the the the combat really interesting because you're almost playing a game within a game which is cool and you don't see that in a lot of different titles out in the world it wants it being fun we're like even in this moment here where you get a chance to see like that enemy set a rocket at me and I basically rerouted it back to the enemy uh with the ability to hit a very specific node within the grouping that was there I really am hype for progmana I think it's a game that I have you know wasn't really high on my list until I got a chance to check it out at summer games fast but now that I'm playing it or now that I had a chance to play it it might be one of my most anticipated games of the year I think it won't be a game that is going to
take a long time to complete it doesn't feel like a game that is going to waste your time it feels like it's going to respect your time in a lot of different ways and it feels like there's going to be a ton of exploration in this game that's going to be a lot of fun uh while giving you some really cool moments to be able to like learn about the story learn about the world learn about you know all of those kind of elements coming together and the time that I've had with it has been super super fun I'm dying to hear more about what this character's characters are going to be uh TDH in the chat asks about replayability I think what you'll probably wind up seeing is something to the effect of um multiple uh difficulty levels where you'll have to go through the nodes faster to be able to get to uh the damage phases for some of this stuff and these boss battles are not easy like they
actually are really really smartly done because you're having to do as you can see on screen multiple button presses multiple dodges you're trying to figure out the best ways to get to the routing to open up those pieces on the monsters to be able to get the extra damage I think you'll see some probably like time uh attack kind of stuff where you're trying to do that stuff in the fastest time available and you know they'll probably definitely make the the enemies harder to kill those kinds of things I think that stuff is always going to be um something that that is going to be a lot of fun and it's going to bring something very special to the table for a game that is a new IP uh a game that is something that has been kind of just thought of in this way as as a new uh almost game type and almost a new kind of genre uh because it's not a puzzler uh and it's it's not just straight action it's like a super weird mix of both but every time I got a chance to play with it I've come back impressed and I feel like it's going to be a game that is going to potentially
get some good marks when it winds up dropping um and there's going to be something that I think a lot of people are going to really dig once they get their hands on with it uh while it was also at the capcom offices I got a chance to check out Alex who just was dropped today uh as she fight a six I'm a big fighting game fan uh Alex you know coming from the the old games that that that were in the previous parts of the IP getting a chance to play him he's super fun like he's super cool uh I like him a lot he's he's like a grappler mixed with a with a with a wrestler with a with a badler he's he's really fun he feels heavy when you play with him he feels like a monster when you're like pushing through and getting into those fights where he has really good pokes but he has like really strong normals uh so you're playing a little bit of a strategy game where you're really trying to balance out his ability to get in will also keep away so he's both a keep away and a rush down character in a lot of different uh aspects which is uh I think
you kind of see but you don't see that often um in in the Street Fighter space it was fun to get he's getting some some hands on time with him uh and playing through uh that particular game which is a ton of fun I had a blast with that in a in a real way another game that I got a chance to check out here in Portland actually I got a chance to go to the panic offices who are uh publishing this game called a big walk a big walk is really fun it is almost like another kind of um uh big open world almost like uh what do you call those rooms not a panic room uh a puzzle room where you go in and you kind of be in these big spaces together with four of your friends those me uh my homie Mary Kish uh over over on Twitch and two of my other homies
escape room that's what I was looking for escape room thank you gd it feels like a big escape room that we were playing in we're in this huge area in this huge open world and you don't really get a ton of um instruction you're really kind of walking through the process of figuring out where you want to go and where you want to be and how do you want those things to kind of look and where you're trying to coordinate because you can talk um in game through your headsets through your microphones but you're really these kind of weird uh almost bird people who are walking through this space you're leaving notes for each other you have these big balls of light that you're able to use to kind of guide your way there are no excuse me there are no checkpoints you're not really kind of putting markers on the ground you're really looking at the environment and trying to figure out where to go so that you can all uh accomplish and complete these tasks
within the game and we spent probably like I think two hours playing this uh at the at the at the offices what's super cool is this is a game where you can play with four players you can play I think from two to twelve players in the game um and what's awesome is all of you can kind of spread out and go in different directions you you're not really tied to each other there is no like rubber banding where you go to go too far and go to a space and you all kind of have to stay in in proximity to each other like there was a moment in the in in our in our run where we were going super far away from each other we were going in totally different directions um and we were moving throughout the map and going into all these different spots and you really are off on your own you can go whichever way you want and you are looking for various things
you're looking for keys to open up these boxes you're looking for ways to finish these puzzles that are that are bigger than you can jump on each other's bodies and kind of make the a tall version of yourself to uh you know reach higher places you're looking at you know ways to accomplish these puzzles and what happens is what makes it super dope is that you're scaling the missions or scaling the puzzles based on how many people are in the session so there were some because we're going to for a four person session that you needed for for people to be able to complete that one particular um uh mission if there were just two people it would make that mission shorter or make that a task shorter and lower to the ground so like we had to do this thing we had to jump on each other's backs or shoulders I should say and jump up and hit this puzzle like this put this part right here so it took all four of us to be able to go there now you could do this multiple ways you can throw the ball up there and hit that button and knock the thing down
you can do uh you know jump on each other's shoulders um but they would be smaller and shorter if it was only two people so it's really smart in the way that they played this and the way you kind of work together as a team to be able to make this happen um and it's just super fun like you did just a vibe session like this was one of the most fun things I got in the chance to play in a while because it wound up being something where you weren't really trying to gain plan in the same ways that you think like there isn't a competition later to this it is all very cooperative and you're all trying to figure out the best ways to accomplish this goal and accomplish these tasks and being able to do so in a way that felt fun in a way that felt new in a way that when you finished one of those tasks you felt really accomplished and smart was super cool it was really dope to be able to see you know all of those pieces kind of come together all at once and feel like you were doing something um that felt really special which was
cool and there were moments in it too where not only were you kind of doing tasks and kind of just looking at the world and doing stuff you know like this section right here where we were playing and kind of painting each other's bodies and your body colors were changed but there were moments in it where it was it was completely just a vibe uh and we were chilling and hanging out and just like watching the sunset and like listening to music together and hanging out like this part right here actually was was was super dope like we were just hanging out we had gotten this key uh to go do this thing and then we just went to go hang out and chill out by the ocean and just chill and it was great it was awesome it was like camping but in the video game without dirt and without bugs and without weird things in the in the juggle not juggle in the forest trying to each a face so it was really cool i'm really excited for it i think panic as a company continues to make really dope stuff they continue to work with so many dope uh developers you know those folks made the play date uh they worked on and worked with a company who made thank
goodness you're here which is one of my favorite games in the past couple of years they've made a ton of really awesome and super fun stuff in that mix and i'm just dying to see more games like this i think games like this continue to bring something very special to the world um and bring a new version of collective storytelling uh collective kind of uh memory making and are just really awesome experiences that kind of uh work through i think this would be a really fun game to play with folks in sport in this want to be world you know uh folks in brokago who'll be really dope to kind of play this thing when it drops it'll be on playstation i know i don't know if it's going to any other platforms but i know it'll probably be on pc and it'll definitely be on playstation so it was it was a blast playing that thing and getting some time in with it and and rocking with it um the last game that i do want to talk about that was also at gdc and i forgot to talk about was this game called hit him up high rise the reason why i like this game is because it has a
character who looks like this it is a beat him up brawler with action hero analogs that if you are a 80s or 90s kid you absolutely know immediately so this character is who look like show enough there's a character who looks like bolo from uh enter the dragon is a character who i played with who looked like um westie snipes and demolition man it is so dope that they are going for all of the cheekiness in this title by using these visual analogs for a style that makes sense and for a genre that makes a ton of sense it is one of the coolest things i got a chance to play in a very long time and i was vibing off this thing super hard let me see if i can find a part so i picked
i picked the show enough dude first and then i switched because i wanted to see what the westie snipes looking do looks like um and he looks exactly like westie snipes from uh demolition man he has the overalls he has the green hair um almost like a side scrolling double dragon scot pilgrim s kind of game i think there's probably two people on screen at a time i don't think that's going to be four because the sprites are really big on screen and the the the characters are fairly big on screen but i had a blast with this thing this was probably my sleeper hit of of uh gdc yeah this thing was in here too i don't know if they're going to keep that in there i mean it wasn't thing that happened in uh demolition man uh so we'll see how that plays uh four for for the community uh if you're not watching the chat here in real in real time while we're doing the recording it was like hey yo in the chat um but i love the way that they've done this thing
where they've given this character their own kind of space to live and also it just feels really like cool to see people pay homage to characters that we grew up in in love in the action genre uh and be really dope in these ways it's so cool to be able to see people continue to make really awesome titles like this because stuff like this doesn't get made anymore it doesn't doesn't happen in those same ways uh like we used to see it winds up being something where we get new versions of stuff but they don't really speak to the the history of of of those particular kinds of titles so you know it was a it was a really dope time at gdc i had a blast checking out all ton of games i am still playing through a bunch of stuff right now i'm still going through my time with crimson desert because that game is hefty marathon has stolen my life uh i'm playing marathon almost every night
at this point um trying to get better and trying to get you know uh more loot in those spaces playing a bunch of other stuff that i that i can't talk about yet but is it was really really good crimson desert is i can't say actually i just was about to say things and i can't say because i'm still under bargo david um but i'm playing it but i did say on our on my social channels uh today we will not be having a review on launch i do want to see about getting a copy for uh console it's going to be on xbox play anywhere it's going to be in game pass i believe so i'll be able to check it out on there i'm going to try to see if i can get it on playstation 5 pro so we can check out the pss r2 stuff that's in there um but i'm excited to see more about what this game is going to be i feel like i'm already learning a ton of things about it and and around it um and uh i'm just having a blast with the stuff that i've been able to play i've jumped back into wwe uh two k 26 which is really good uh they just had a conversation around
starfield and their new uh content that's coming up we had a preview of that as well we saw a bunch of that a couple days ago they just renounced also that's coming to ps5 there's a lot of really dope stuff in the mix that's happening right now and also all this one other thing there was um we have been doing some fun things uh with our friends over at gunner gunner glasses they sent over their spider-man miles morales set um which is maybe that'll maybe that'll focus on it it'll potentially will focus on it okay there we go maybe well um but they sent over their miles morales set from their gunner line and i've been a big fan of gunner gear for a long period of time i love this this thing because it has let's see if i can focus it it has like the webbing on the bridge of the nose they've done the really cool thing with the design on this one that's why to see if i can get it to focus um but this is great i love gunner gear because they do
you know the things that i need from glasses like this of course they blocked blue light um they have a really fantastic feel like the the the tines feel really good the bridge feels like these are really like almost kind of close enough to to my glasses so it has that really great tint to it so when i'm watching and playing games or while or you know on my phone a ton um i'm able to kind of uh that have my eyes be strained a lot excuse me they're really dope and they're not that expensive they're like 60 bucks for a pair what i also love about gunner glasses that you can get prescription lenses in these glasses now so you if you're looking for a really dope styling for your for your glasses i'm going to see if i can if i can pull it in again real tight um and you're a big fan of spider-man the mesmeralus versions of these glasses are really really dope like let me see if i can show you the back of these really really fast too so like you see you can get the like doe webbing on on the
sides of it um i love these these are really cool they're also um bringing out a set for the fallout series so they've done some some um glasses for the fallout series again shout out to our friends over gunner for hooking us up we had some overwatch versions that they sent some uh like last year and now this version with the spider-man uh kind of motif on it is super dope um and again before we get about it here i got to get a big shout out to our friends over a gb studio uh for studio magazine for sponsoring this episode of spawn on me hoping to do more with them uh next month and and do some more with them uh and again if you're looking to get uh some of the goodies from them we'll have links to uh we can go check that stuff out in the show notes for the show that was a lot of discussing that was a lot of talking uh i want to thank you all for rocking with me this week and every week as always uh we're trying to get more of the shows out in the hopper
last week was crazy because i was at gdc recording a bunch of stuff um so we're going to try to be uh more timely with with weekly episodes but there's going to be multiple episodes coming out very very soon because uh i have an interview with the friends from uh poppy playtime uh that fantastic awesome uh horror game that a really dope interview with them that we're going to be putting up or probably space amount we will put it out on on monday um and then we have another one uh for this really great um uh group of folks who if you're really a fan of rock band and you have some of your old rock band gear in the closet somewhere in your garage there's going to be a new version of a game like that coming out uh hopefully by the end of the year that we're going to be talking to them about we're going to be doing the interview tomorrow with them i lost the interview during gdc uh i got some corrupted files or something like that and i freaked it out so we're going to redo that interview uh this week and that'll be coming out in a couple of weeks as well alongside we're talking to our friends over asus to talk about the new dope kujima laptop
talking to them about uh coming on the show they're talking about some of their gear and a lot of different stuff and then upcoming weeks uh checking out a lot of stuff we're going to have the folks from ball and gun game who have been watching my social media channels that blew up to almost two million views almost it's almost a three million views now uh on on channel so lots of dope stuff coming alongside some more reviews alongside more guests alongside more conversations around the gaming industry and all the dope stuff in it so until then much love to you all i hope you are having a wonderful week go Venezuela i hope they hope they bring it home uh go nicks and uh new day sucks we'll see y'all soon shout out to overfemme oh my god i want to beat Brock Leslie's ass anyway much love to you all have a wonderful rest of your week until we see you let's place the marathon together let's place some mothers up together i'll see you soon and peace
