Dissident Parade Defies Ban, Sparks Tensions

Organized by Sayarad, a group police have tied to the new IRA, the event drew folds from Craigin to the city cemetery, led by 18 in combat style. Gear and backed by a flute band, police spotted masked marchers with petrol bombs at the cemetery end, and a car went up in flames on central drive, prompting warnings to steer clear. Of the area, the Parade's commission had ruled against any paramilitary clothing or illegal flags this year, but participants ignored it, potentially breaking the Terrorism Act of 2000. Chief Superintendent Gillian Carney says a lie probe is underway, building on past cases where they've nailed offenders as tensions linger in the community.
