DHS Detainer Issued for Murder Suspect in Chicago

0:00On March 23rd, the Department of Homeland Security has issued a detainer for a 25-year-old Venezuelan national charged with first degree, murder in the death of an 18-year-old college freshman in Chicago, Jose Medina. Medina faces additional counts of attempted murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm after allegedly shooting shared in Gorman near. Loyola University campus back in March. Here this year, around 1 a.m., Gorman was walking with friends by Lake Michigan when the attack happened. Federal officials note that Medina, Medina having copped by Border Patrol in May of 2023 and released into the U.S., then arrested, locally for shoplifting shortly after, and let go again. DHS is pressing Illinois leaders, including the governor, to hold the suspect and not release him amid Chicago's sanctuary policies that limit, cooperation with immigration enforcement. Gorman's family has called for accountability, saying failures in the system led to this preventable tragedy.
