0:00Hello, my friends welcome to the deeper daily podcast. I am your host Paul White. It is the 28th day of April It is midweek Bible study time. I hope that you are enjoying our journey through the Old Testament wrapped around one central thought concerning Jesus scriptures Concerning Jesus. We're not exhausting it there. We certainly aren't hitting them all and I am not claiming that we are doing anything remotely close to what Jesus did when he used the scriptures to show the two disciples on the road to Emmaus Who he was but we're doing the best we can and we're doing what we can as directed by the Holy Spirit I'm currently working on a book form of this study. It will not be as exhausting as the teaching in regards to length. I'm covering multiple books in the teaching sessions whereas the book that I'm writing is really focused on how this works how we can read the Bible with Jesus at the center

1:03How the New Testament teaches us to do it how Jesus teaches us to do it how translation sometimes teaches us to do it and to really hone our Bible study toolbox if that sounds like something of interest to you be listening over the next few months we'll be giving more details as we come closer and closer to finishing what I think will be one of if not the most important books that I've written and a book that could be very valuable to someone who is new to reading the Bible but also and maybe even more so very valuable to someone who has read the Bible for years but has never really found Jesus in some of the text and doesn't know how and that's what we're trying to do All right, what we're trying to do today is finish this section in 2nd Thessalonians chapter 2 on the lawless one yesterday I read you through the 10th verse where it says every kind of wicked deception for those who are perishing because they refuse to love the truth and so be saved

2:05and I think the salvation being spoken of here has to do with being saved from the wrath that was coming upon the religious system of that generation. This is the great 80-70 moment. It seems to me that that's what Paul is ultimately writing about and that leads us to a couple of verses that I think can be problematic so we need context and we need to know authorial intent and we need to be a little open-minded All right, verses 11 and 12 will end this big section on the man of lawlessness and the last those sort of last days of that era. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion leading them to believe what is false so that all who have not believed the truth but took pleasure in unrighteousness will be condemned. Now within the context Paul's using a statement that is pretty common to

3:08the prophetic language of the world of his day and it's pretty common to Paul. Paul speaks in these terms in Romans 1 Jesus speaks along these lines in Matthew 24 when he talks about people being deceived. In fact, let me take you to that verse. That's that one's one that and I didn't have it ready. So give me a half a second. Matthew 24 verse 5 beware that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name saying I am the Messiah and they will lead many astray and so the prophecy holds that there will be deception. Paul says God sends them powerful delusion and that probably is a stretch back to his Jewish roots where anything that came to the family of man was sent by God and it leads us to a 12th verse all who have not believed the truth but took pleasure in unrighteousness will be condemned and I think that condemnation is the death that happens to those who don't

4:09follow the words of Jesus and flee Jerusalem when the Roman army surround it. Okay, that's all contextually what we can do with that but I think we can do more and and the reason I think we can do more is because I have become more and more open as I've gotten older and studied the Bible more and more. I've become more open to the idea and to what I think is a very true reality that the authors of scripture develop their theology across time. I notice it in the old testament where the early portions of the text have God demanding blood sacrifice. By the time you get to Psalms they start to question that by the time you get to Isaiah they have God himself speaking and saying, I don't care for any of this. So who changed? And that to me is not God changing. He's the God who changes not. He's unchangeable, immutable, neither shadow of turning. So it means that the authors are starting to perceive God through a different lens. We get to Jesus. We see what that lens really is. I think you can kind of tell what my concerning Jesus

5:12series is all about. That allows me to see that within individual writers like the Apostle Paul to watch his theology develop across time, to see and we don't know exactly when his letters were written. I used to think that really mattered. Like, oh, this book had to come before this book because he wouldn't have said this and then said this. But I've realized that that's expecting linear growth out of humans. We don't grow that way. We grow forward and backward and forward and backward and left and right and up and down. In other words, sometimes our development doesn't make a linear path from step A to step B. It takes a step from A to sideways A and then backwards and then back to A and then to B. So I don't think it matters so much when they were written. Although the Thessalonican books are almost definitely written earlier, at least first Thessalonians, then the other book I want to use and that's Romans. And even if they're not, we can see authors

6:12stepping. Like, for instance, in the Corinthian letter Paul chides the Corinthians for following men. Some of you say I'm of Apollo. Some of you say I'm of Cephas. Some of you say I'm of Christ. These things ought not to be. And then just three chapters later, Paul goes follow me. And then to the church at Ephesus, he says, follow Christ. Let's follow God. And so I think it's Paul just working his theology across time. In 2 Thessalonians, 2 12, God takes pleasure. Those that don't believe the truth took pleasure on righteousness, they're going to be condemned. But then in Romans 11 32, Paul says, for God has imprisoned all in disobedience so that he may be merciful to all. So here's a more mature theology. Here's Paul having had a greater revelation of God's grace, saying, how I feel about God now is that he imprisoned everyone in disobedience. Jew and Gentala like the previous verses that he

7:18has said, you were once disobedient to God, but now receive mercy. They've been disobedient in order that mercy is shown to you. God actually imprisoned all of you, all of us in disobedience so that he may be merciful to all. A statement that sounds like to me sounds more like this. God made sure that everybody was equally in trouble so that God could be equally merciful to everybody. Now that's a different theology than you get if you only had 2 Thessalonians 2 12. And that's how I think we have to read is allow humans to grow in their understanding of who God is. And it's why we have to be careful with pick a verse theology here, verse their verse, and we have to take the body of, take the body of the new covenant, take the body of the way Jesus talks and land where it looks the closest to Jesus. I hope I've helped you with that verse more than I've hindered you and your journey. Sometimes it seems like we have to work through some of that confusion to land somewhere. We'll move on tomorrow.
