I'm Jill and today is the 31st day of March. Welcome everyone. We're finishing this month together. Can you believe it? We are finishing the third month of this brand new year together today and if you're marking it off, we just began our eighth book of the Bible. We started Judges yesterday and I'm trying to memorize the Old Testament this year. I used to know it when I was young and I forgot it. So Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, here we are in Judges but we did pause

1:03in Genesis to read the book of Job early on because we read it in chronological order. So Judges starts our eighth book of the Bible. Let's do it again. Genesis, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua and here we are in Judges. Today we read Judges chapters three through five and this week we're reading the new English translation, Judges chapter three. These were the nations the Lord permitted to remain so he could use them to test Israel. He wanted to test all those who had not experienced battle against the Canaanites. He left those nations simply because he wanted to teach the subsequent generations of Israelites who had not experienced the earlier battles, how to conduct holy war. These were the nations, the five lords of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians and the Hivites living in Mount Lebanon from Mount Baal, Hermon to Libohemaph.

2:09They were left to test Israel so the Lord would know if his people would obey the commands he gave their ancestors through Moses. The Israelites lived among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Parasites, Hivites and Jebusites. They took the Canaanites daughters as wives and gave their daughters to the Canaanites. They worshiped their gods as well. The Israelites did evil in the Lord's sight. They forgot the Lord their God and worshiped the Bales and the Asheras. The Lord was furious with Israel and turned them over to King Kushin, Rishathiam of Armon, Hireyam. They were Kushin, Rishathiams, Subjects for eight years. When the Israelites cried out for help to the Lord, he raised up a deliverer for the Israelites who rescued them. His name was off-neil son of Kinas, Caleb's younger brother. The Lord's spirit empowered him and he led Israel. When he went to do battle, the Lord handed over to him, King Kushin, Rishathiam of Armon,

3:15and he overpowered him. The land had rest for forty years, then off-neil son of Kinas died. The Israelites again did evil in the Lord's sight. The Lord gave King Iglan of Moab control over Israel because they had done evil in the Lord's sight. Iglan formed alliances with the Ammonites and Amalakites. He came and defeated Israel and they seized the city of date palm trees. The Israelites were subject to King Iglan of Moab for eighteen years. When the Israelites cried out for help to the Lord, he raised up a deliverer for them. His name was Iehud son of Gera, the Benjaminite, a left-handed man. The Israelites sent him to King Iglan of Moab with their tribute payment. He had made himself a sword. It had two edges and was eighteen inches long. He strapped to under his coat on his right thigh. He brought the tribute payment to King Iglan of Moab. Now Iglan was a very fat man.

4:18After Iehud brought the tribute payment, he dismissed the people who had carried it. But he went back once he reached the carved images at Gilgal. He said to Iglan, I have a secret message for you, O King. Iglan said, be quiet. All his attendants left. When Iehud approached him, he was sitting in his well-vitalated upper room all by himself. Iehud said, I have a message from God for you. When Iglan rose up from his seat, he had reached with his left hand, pulled the sword from his right thigh and drove it into Iglan's belly. The handle went in after the blade and the fat closed around the blade. For Iehud did not pull the sword out of his belly. As Iehud went out into the vestibule, he closed the doors of the upper room behind him and locked them. When Iehud had left, Iglan's servants came and saw the locked doors of the upper room. They said he must be relieving himself in the well-vitalated inner room.

5:20They waited so long they were embarrassed, but he still did not open the doors of the upper room. Finally, they took the key and opened the doors. Right before their eyes was their master sprawled out dead on the floor. Now Iehud had escaped while they were delaying. When he passed the carved images he escaped to Syra. When he reached Syra, he blew a trumpet in the up from my hill country. The Israelites went down with him from the hill country, with Iehud in the lead. He said to them, follow me, for the Lord is about to defeat your enemies the Moabites. They followed him, captured the fords of the Jordan River opposite Moab, and did not let anyone cross. That day they killed about 10,000 Moabites, all strong, capable warriors, not one escaped. Israel humiliated Moab that day, and the land had rest for 80 years. After Iehud came Shamgar, son of Enath,

6:21he killed 600 Philistines with an ox-code, so he also delivered Israel. The Israelites again did evil in the Lord's sight after Iehud's death. The Lord turned them over to King Jaban of Canaan, who ruled in Hezor. The general of his army was Syra, who lived in Horosheth, Haggayim. The Israelites cried out for help to the Lord because Syra, had 900 chariots with iron-rimmed wheels, and cruelly oppressed the Israelites for 20 years. Now, Debra, a prophetess, wife of Lapidot, was leading Israel at that time. She would sit under the date palm tree of Debra between Rama and Bethel in the Ephraimite hill country. The Israelites would come up to her to have their disputes settle. She summoned Barat, she summoned Barak, son of Obinoam from Qadash in Naftali. She said to him, Is it not true that the Lord God of Israel is commanding you?

7:24Go, march to Mount Tabor. Take with you 10,000 men from Naftali and Zebulin. I will bring Syra, the general of Jaban's army to you, at the Qashan river, along with his chariots in a huge army. I will hand him over to you. Barak said to her, If you go with me, I will go. But if you do not go with me, I will not go. She said, I will indeed go with you, but you will not gain fame on the expedition you are undertaking. For the Lord will turn Syra over to a woman. Debra got up and went with Barak to Qadash. Barak summoned men from Zebulin in Naftali to Qadash, and 10,000 men followed him. Debra went up with him as well. Now Heber, the key knight, had moved away from the keynites. The descendants of Hobab, Moses' father-in-law. He lived near the great tree in Zaninem near Qadash. When Syra heard that Barak's son of Obinoam

8:24had gone up to Mount Tabor, he ordered all his chariots, 900 chariots, with iron-rimmed wheels, and all the troops he had with him. To go from Herasha had goyem to the Qashan river. Debra said to Barak, spring into action, but this is the day the Lord is handing Syra over to you. Has the Lord not taken the lead? So Barak went down from Mount Tabor with 10,000 men following him. The Lord routed Syra all his chariotry and all his army with the edge of the sword. Syra jumped out of his chariot and ran away on foot. Now Barak chased the chariots and the army all the way to Herasha had goyem. Syra's whole army died by the edge of the sword, not even one survived. Now Syra ran away on foot to the tent of Jail, wife of Hibber, the key knight, for King Jaban of Hazor and the family of Heber, the key knight, had made a peace treaty.

9:26Jail came out to welcome Syra. She said to him, stop and rest, my Lord. Stop and rest with me. Don't be afraid. So Syra stopped to rest in her tent and she put a blanket over him. He said to her, give me a little water to drink because I'm thirsty. She opened a goat skin container of milk and gave him some milk to drink and she covered him up again. He said to her, stand watch at the entrance to the tent. If anyone comes along and asks you, is there a man here, say no. Then Jail, wife of Hibber took a tent peg in one hand and a hammer in the other. She crept up on him, drove the tent peg through his temple into the ground while he was asleep from exhaustion and he died. Now Barak was chasing Syra. Jail went out to welcome him. She said to him, come here and I will show you the man you are searching for. He went with her into the tent and there he saw Syra sprawled out dead

10:28with the tent peg through his temple. That day God humiliated King Jaban of Canaan before the Israelites. Israel's power continued to overwhelm King Jaban of Canaan until they did away with him. On that day Deborah and Barak, son of Obinum, sang this victory song. When the leaders took the lead in Israel, when the people answered the call to war, praise the Lord. Hear O Kings, pay attention O rulers. I will sing to the Lord. I will sing to the Lord God of Israel. O Lord, when you departed from Seer, when you marched from Edom's plains, the earth shook, the heavens poured down, the clouds poured down rain, the mountains trembled before the Lord, the God of Sinai, before the Lord God of Israel, in the days of Shemgar, son of Eneth, in the days of Jail, caravans disappeared, travelers had to go on winding side roads.

11:30Warriors were scarce. They were scarce in Israel, until you arose Deborah, until you arose as a motherly protector in Israel. God chose new leaders, then fighters appeared in the city gates, but I swear not a shield or spear could be found among 40 military units in Israel. My heart went out to Israel's leaders to the people who answered the call to war. Praise the Lord, you who ride unlike colored female donkeys, who sit on saddle blankets, you who walk on the road, pay attention. Hear the sound of those who divide the sheep among the watering places. There they tell of the Lord's victorious deeds, victorious deeds of his warriors in Israel. Then the Lord's people went down to the city gates. Wake up, wake up Deborah, wake up, wake up, sing a song, get up Barack,

12:31capture your prisoners of war, son of Abinoim. Then the survivors came down to the mighty ones. The Lord's people came down to me as warriors. They came from Ephraim who uprooted Emilek. They followed after you Benjamin with your soldiers. From Maker, leaders came down. From Zebulin came the ones who marched carrying an officer's staff. Issaqar's leaders were with Deborah, the men of Issaqar supported Barack. Into the valley they were sent under Barack's command. Among the clans of Rubin, there was intense heart searching. Why do you remain among the sheepfolds, listening to the shepherds, playing their pipes for their flocks? As for the clans of Rubin, there was intense searching of heart. Gilead stayed put beyond the Jordan River. As for Dan, why did he seek temporary employment in the shipyards? Asha remained on the sea coast. He stayed by his harbors.

13:32The men of Zebulin were not concerned about their lives. Naftali charged onto the battlefields. Kings came, they fought. The kings of Cain and fought at Taneck by the waters of Miggado. But they took no silver as plunder. From the sky, the stars fought. From their paths in the heavens, they fought against Sissera. The Cashon River carried them off. The river confronted them. The Cashon River. Step on the necks of the strong. The horses hooves pounded the ground. The stallions galloped madly. Call judgment down on Miraz, says the angel of the Lord. Be sure to call judgment down on those who live there, because they did not come to help in the Lord's battle. To help in the Lord's battle against the warriors, the most rewarded of women should be Geo. The wife of Hibber, the key knight. She should be the most rewarded of women who lives in tents.

14:33He asked for water and she gave him milk. In a bowl fit for a king, she served him curds. Her left hand reached for the tent peg. Her right hand for the workman's hammer. She hammered Sissera. She shattered his skull. She smashed his head. She drove the tent peg through his temple. Between her feet, he collapsed. He fell limp and was lifeless. Between her feet, he collapsed and fell. In the spot where he collapsed, there he fell violently killed. Through the window she looked, the Sissera's mother cried out through the lattice. Why is his chariot so slow to return? Why are the hoofbeats of his chariot horses delayed? The wisest of her lady's answer. Indeed, she even thinks to herself. No doubt, they are gathering and dividing the plunder. A girl or two for each man to rape. Sissera is grabbing up colorful cloth.

15:35He is grabbing up colorful, embroidered cloth. Two pieces of colorful, embroidered cloth for the neck of the plunderer. May all your enemies perish like this, Lord. But may those who love you shine, like the rising sun at its brightest, and the land had rest for 40 years. Okay, okay. We've got some language here, really early on in the reading that we have got to pay attention to. And I promise you that if we grab hold of this, we will better understand relationships in our own life and how we walk out certain things within these relationships. Okay, so we're in the book of Judges. We went from Moses leading the people, Joshua leading the people.

16:35And now the people are being led by various judges. So a judge that is ruling the people of Israel, in this case, is not how we would know a judge of today to be that ruled in a courtroom with a robe, a gavel, and hopefully is not only knowledgeable, but also wise, in wisdom, law, justice, a judge that we are talking about as it pertains to today's reading, is a deliverer, a leader raised by God, essentially to rescue the tribes of Israel from foreign oppressors. This is more militant and administrative, rather than legalities as we may come to understand it.

17:40Judges ruled between the leadership of Joshua until the Israelites get their first king, that they will demand. They are chosen by God often in response when Israel repents. And these judges are then empowered by the spirit of God. Now, they do not rule over the entire people of Israel, but certain judges will rule certain tribes. So we meet four judges today, and yes, there is a woman in one of the four. So with understanding the role of a judge, let's hit that language that's gonna help us in our lives every day if we really get it and hold onto it. These were the nations, the Lord permitted to remain,

He left those nations simply because he wanted to teach the subsequent generations of Israelites who had not experienced the earlier battles, how to conduct holy war. Here's the clincher. In verse four, they were left to test Israel. So the Lord would know if his people would obey the commands he gave their ancestors through Moses. Here's what I want us to understand and really get a hold of this to understand the person of God and to understand our part in this relationship with God that should carry out with relationship with others.

19:43Today's reading begins and picks up off of a time when Israel has once again repented for their sin. God honors a repented heart everywhere in the Bible that we have experienced it so far but that does not mean that he trusts them immediately because there has been repentance. I'm gonna let that sit just for a second. There has to be trust built. There's a period, a time lapse. After trust has been broken, repentance has been implemented. There's been a turning, a walking in the other direction to come back around and to not repeat the same patterns of sin and bad choices.

20:45If we've really learned the lesson, we will not do it again. We will not repeat the pattern, the sin. We maybe have heard this theology over the years which theology can come in waves, long periods of decades, centuries even, where we believe certain things because they were handed down. Nobody's touched them or tested them or shaken them or questioned them. And they go untouched, unrot, until it takes that one person to speak out and then we usually want to stone that person to death. How dare they refute scripture. And that one person changes the trajectory of faith and belief as we know it as they had the courage to ask what no one else would or did.

21:45So maybe you've heard this theology that a loving God does not test his people. Well, we clearly see it here today. God tested the Israelites. One, by showing those that who had not yet experienced earlier battles, how to conduct holy war, but also he tested them to know if they would now obey. In my opinion, this is the very practical thing that we can take from today. If you are rebuilding a relationship with someone where you have been the person that has broken trust, you have lied, you have dishonored, you have whatever it is.

22:46There is a period of trust that has to be built. We sometimes so quickly want to get through the process that we will do anything to get that person to trust us just to reinstate our position back to ease our conscience, to quickly get through this, bypass all the hard work, and there's even language that happens. It's called gaslighting. You mean you're not going to trust me? Things like, you're not going to trust me? I said I was sorry. Things like, you just have to hold a grudge, don't you? This is called gaslighting. This is to try to get out of what actually needs to happen. Trust has to be built, which means you don't just hear their words,

23:46you watch their actions, you look for consistency. So if you are either on the end of building trust back with a person that broke trust or you are the person that needs to see trust reinstated, there is a period of time that is acceptable to watch their actions not just listen to their words because we'll say anything to push the pause button and resume life as fast as we want to because we are so uncomfortable in the hard work because we are so used to having our way and being in control. So there's no formula for how long you should build trust. We read through these stories in the Bible.

24:48They happen so fast, sentence after sentence, judge after judge after judge, but we're understanding that there's long periods of time that take place through some of these things. And then sometimes when you're fighting people groups off, you don't have a lot of time. You have to obey God at the very first command. And so this is what we are seeing today. Through the deliverance of these deliverers or judges, we see God take the Israelites at their confession of repentance, at their sacrifice of their sin and say, okay, let's put this into action. Will you obey? And to the practicality side of relationships,

25:51consistency is key. State what you intend to do. Follow through with what you intend to do. Do it. Be a person of your word. Don't even say words. Follow through with the actions. And just a really big pro tip here. If you don't do it in humility, it's not going to work. If you still want to be in control of the situation and the relationship, it's not going to work. So this hopefully gives us a little insight into what God is actually doing through the people to build trust by testing their repentance. You can take a person at their word if their actions match their word. Father, we thank you for your word today. Thank you that you judge our hearts. You know our hearts.

26:52And sometimes, God, we need to practice these words. Practice, practice, practice words so that we can walk them out so that our actions will match our words. We're not going to get it right when we have lived in such bad patterns sometimes for so long. But by your grace, God, grant us grace to keep going, to keep trying to get up when we fall down and to try again. Let us be people of our word. Let us be people that you can trust. We look to you all the time to see if we can trust you, to see if you are faithful. Let us be trustworthy people. Let us be faithful to our word. Let our yes be yes and our no be no. May we walk with integrity.

I have been listening for about four years but I've never called in before. I feel like the Holy Spirit has been prompting me to make this phone call for quite a while. And for some reason I don't know if it's just stubborn or pride. I don't know what it is.

31:56I haven't made the call. But here I am now. And I need prayer. There is something that is preventing me from being home with my family. And it is out of my hands. And I need God to come through in a big way and do something miraculous and amazing. And my wife and I have been praying separately that he would show us the path. And I feel like we're really close. But I need him to come through. And I know that his word says that when he brings a couple together in marriage which he did that no man should separate it and yet we find ourselves in this predicament. So if you could pray that our family could be reunited that I'd be able to be home with my wife, with my kids sitting around the dinner table,

32:58hearing about school, watching them grow, and being able to teach them the things that they need to know about Jesus and about life. Just that we have the opportunity to be a family. 36:00In Psalm 90, satisfy us each morning with your unfailing love. So we may sing for joy to the end of our lives. Give us gladness and proportion to our form of misery. And may the Lord our God show us his approval and make our efforts successful. Yes, make our efforts successful in Jesus' name. I also like to lift up Terry and Florida who's had heart issues for quite some time now. And I'd like to lift up his wife also. I pray for healing for Terry and his body. I pray for a successful procedure done on the 22nd. We pray that all things would work together for Terry's good and we know that you wish above all else that Terry would prosper and live in health just as his spirit prospers. And I pray for a blessed grace for his wife and strength for both of them.
