00No matter who you are, no matter where you've been and no matter where you are, write this very second. You are welcome here. Welcome to this safe space, daily audio-bival chronological I'm Jill and today is the 13th day of March. How are you doing? How's your heart today? What's going on? Let's run in through your mind that you've got to let go of what's happening in your body that you take note of. Have you checked in with you today? That's always a good thing to do. I love this YouTuber. She's a beautiful redhead and I love to watch everything that she does to take care of herself. And there's a little reminder that says before her videos pop up, there's a reminder that says, unclench your jaw, relax your shoulders and take a deep breath.

01It's such a good reminder for me. Let's do that together. Unclench your jaw, relax your shoulders and let's take a deep breath and let it go. Just feel so good to let go of the things that we don't need to be carrying right now, doesn't it? I hope you are well and I'm glad that you are here. Let's jump into the word. Today we're reading Deuteronomy chapters 5 through 7 and just a couple days left in the English standard version, Deuteronomy chapter 5. And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, Here, O Israel, the statutes and the rules that I speak in your hearing today. And you shall learn them and be careful to do them. The Lord our God made a covenant with us in a horib, not with our fathers did the Lord make this covenant but with us who are all of us here alive today.

07The Lord spoke with you face to face at the mountain out of the midst of the fire which I stood between the Lord and you at that time to declare to you the word of the Lord. For you were afraid because of the fire and you did not go up into the mountain. He said, I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above or that is on the earth beneath or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them. For I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to the thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

11You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. For the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. Observe the Sabbath day to keep it holy as the Lord your God commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work. You or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock or the sojourner who is within your gates that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day. What are your father and your mother as the Lord your God commanded you that your days

16may be long and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. You shall not murder and you shall not commit adultery and you shall not steal and you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor and you shall not covet your neighbor's wife and you shall not desire your neighbor's house, his field or his male servant or his female servant, his ox or his donkey or anything that is your neighbor's. These words the Lord spoke to all your assembly at the mountain out of the midst of the fire, the cloud and the thick darkness with a loud voice and he added no more and he wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me and as soon as you heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness while the mountain was burning with fire, you came near to me. All the heads of your tribes and your elders and you said, behold the Lord our God has

20shown us his glory and greatness and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire. This day we have seen God speak with man and man still live. Now therefore why should we die where this great fire will consume us? If we hear the voice of the Lord our God anymore, we shall die. For who is there of all flesh that has heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of fire as we have and has still lived? So near and hear all that the Lord our God will say and speak to us all that the Lord our God will speak to you and we will hear and do it. The Lord heard your words when you spoke to me and the Lord said to me, I have heard the words of this people which they have spoken to you. They are right in all that they have spoken, oh that they had such a heart as this always

22to fear me and to keep all my commandments that it might go well with them and with their descendants forever. Go and say to them, return to your tents but you stand here by me and I will tell you the whole commandment and the statutes and the rules that you shall teach them that they may do them in the land that I am giving them to possess. You shall be careful therefore to do as the Lord your God has commanded you. You shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. You shall walk in all the way that the Lord your God has commanded you that you may live and that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land that you possess. Now this is the commandment, the statutes and the rules that the Lord your God commanded me to teach you that you may do them in the land to which you are going over to possess it. That you may fear the Lord your God, you and your son and your son's sons by keeping

23all his statutes and his commandments which I command you all the days of your life and that your days may be long. Hear therefore, oh Israel, and be careful to do them that it may go well with you and that you may multiply greatly as the Lord, the God of your fathers has promised you in a land flowing with milk and honey. The Lord our God, the Lord is one, you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart, you shall teach them diligently to your children and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise, you shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates and when the Lord

26your God brings you into the land that he swore to your fathers to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob to give you with great and good cities that you did not build and houses full of all good things that you did not fill and sisters that you did not dig and vineyards and olive trees that you did not plant and when you eat and are full, then take care lest you forget the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. It is the Lord your God, you shall fear. Some you shall serve and by his name you shall swear. You shall not go after other gods, the gods of the peoples who are around you. For the Lord your God in your midst is a jealous God, lest the anger of the Lord your God be kindled against you and he destroy you from off the face of the earth. You shall not put the Lord your God to the test as you tested him at Messiah.

31You shall diligently keep the commandments of the Lord your God and his testimonies and his statutes which he has commanded you and you shall do what is right and good in the sight of the Lord that it may go well with you and that you may go in and take possession of the good land that the Lord swore to give to your fathers by thrusting out all your enemies from before you as the Lord has promised. When your Son asks you in time to come, what is the meaning of the testimonies and the statutes and the rules that the Lord our God has commanded you? Then you shall say to your Son, we were Pharaoh slaves in Egypt and the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and the Lord showed signs and wonders great and grievous against Egypt and against Pharaoh and all his household before our eyes and he brought us out from there that he might bring us in and give us the land that he swore to give

32to our fathers and the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes to fear the Lord our God for our good always that he might preserve us alive as we are this day and it will be righteousness for us if we are careful to do all this commandment before the Lord our God as he as commanded us. When the Lord your God brings you into the land that you are entering to take possession of it and clears away many nations before you, the Hittites, the Gargoshites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Parasites, the Havites and the Jebusites, seven nations more numerous and mightier than you and when the Lord your God gives them over to you and you defeat them then you must devote them to complete destruction. You shall make no covenant with them and show no mercy to them. You shall not intermary with them giving your daughters to their sons or taking their daughters for your sons for they would turn away your sons from following me to serve

36other gods and the anger of the Lord would be kindled against you and he would destroy you quickly but thus shall you deal with them. You shall break down their altars and dash and pieces their pillars and chop down their ashram and burn their carved images with fire. For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the Lord set his love on you and shows you for you were the fewest of all peoples but it is because the Lord loves you and is keeping the oath that he swore to your fathers that the Lord has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery from the hand

36of Pharaoh king of Egypt. So therefore that the Lord your God is God the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations and repays to their face those who hate him by destroying them. He will not be slack with one who hates him. He will repay him to his face. You shall therefore be careful to do the commandment and the statutes and the rules that I command you today. Because you listen to these rules and keep and do them the Lord your God will keep with you the covenant and the steadfast love that he swore to your fathers. He will love you bless you and multiply you. He will also bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground your grain and

37your wine and your oil the increase of your herds and the young of your flock and the land that he swore to your fathers to give you. You shall be blessed above all peoples there shall not be male or female barren among you or among your livestock and the Lord will take away from you all sickness and none of the evil diseases of Egypt which you knew will he inflict on you but he will lay them on all who hate you and you shall consume all the peoples that the Lord your God will give over to you. Your eyes shall not pity them neither shall you serve their gods for that would be a snare to you. If you say in your heart these nations are greater than I how can I dispossess them? You shall not be afraid of them but you shall remember what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt.

38The great trials that your eyes saw the signs the wonders the mighty hand and the outstretched arm by which the Lord your God brought you out. So will the Lord your God due to all the peoples of whom you are afraid. Moreover the Lord your God will send Hornets among them until those who are left and hide themselves from you are destroyed. You shall not be in dread of them for the Lord your God is in your midst a great and awesome God. The Lord your God will clear away these nations before you little by little. You may not make an end of them at once lest the wild beasts grow too numerous for you. But the Lord your God will give them over to you and throw them into great confusion until they are destroyed and he will give their kings into your hand and you shall make their name perish from under heaven. No one shall be able to stand against you until you have destroyed them.

42The carved images of their gods you shall burn with fire. You shall not covet the silver or the gold that is on them or take it for yourselves lest you be ensnared by it for it is an abomination to the Lord your God and you shall not bring an abominable thing into your house and become devoted to destruction like it. You shall utterly detest and abore it for it is devoted to destruction. Okay, so we are here in the book of Deuteronomy and we are hearing the final sermons of Moses to the Israelites before they enter into a Promised Land and this is one generation past the OG the original the OI the original Israelites who God delivered directly from Egypt to

43out of slavery into the Promised Land but their rebelliousness their stubbornness cost them. So this is some of them and they are now children that are getting ready to enter into the Promised Land and as we read the Bible we want to know the truth we want to know God as truth and we do this by listening not just to that which is floating around social media that's a really great little snippet or a hot topic but to hear God speak through his word to us to our hearts through his word and sometimes what we read we take it at face value and say yes this is plain and simple right here right now digestible and other times it's like we've got to go down through the layers and so with that being said I want to make

50sure that we hear the heart of God in our reading today in chapter seven when the Lord your God brings you into the land that you are entering to take possession of it and clears away many nations before you the Hittites the Gargoshites the Amorites the Canaanites the Parasites the Hivites and the Jabbisites seven nations more numerous and mightier than you and when the Lord your God gives them over to you and you defeat them then you must devote them to complete destruction you shall make no covenant with them and show no mercy to them you shall not intermary with them giving your daughters to their sons or taking their daughters for your sons here's the heart of God here's the motive for what he's saying for they would turn away your sons from following me to serve other gods and the anger of the Lord will be kindled against

53you and he would destroy you quickly why would God deal with them quickly if they go against his law and intermary now first of all we have to understand again God is not prejudiced this is not the issue I know that sounds a little extreme to even have to say but this is theology that was very prevalent when I was growing up the instruction the motive the heart of God is that he is in a covenantial relationship with the Israelites he is holding them accountable we read this word about them prostituting themselves a harsh word but when you are in a covenant in those of us that are married we understand covenantial relationship I forsake all others

58to come and follow you to be with you to be faithful and loyal to you and sometimes that's not the case this is the same relationship contextually that God is in with the Israelites and they are prostituting themselves giving themselves for free to other gods other people here the heart of God is saying they the other people groups will do whatever they're going to do but you are to do differently you are to follow the laws the boundaries the parameters that I gave you because I know what could happen if you don't you will fall away your sons will intermary your daughters will

58intermary they will leave me and go worship other gods and to hear the consequence then the anger of the Lord will be kindled against you and he would destroy you quickly this is God keeping his word this is God being faithful this is not God who just loves to smite people and wipe them off the face of the earth and and to do that for no reason I can't just talk it up to oh that's God he's just God he can do whatever he wants to do I have to know the heart the motive so that I don't believe the worst about God we know that he is jealous and we would know that he is jealous like like a spouse would be jealous if their spouse was engaged with another person that was taking them away from the spouse that they are in covenant with and that has happened the Israelites have turned

05their back on God for other gods remember when they summoned Aaron to build them a calf that they could worship because Moses was just taken too long talking to God on the mountain they're grumbling they're complaining let's go back to slavery at least we had meat there so I say this so that we do not assume the worst about God and that we just don't glaze over it and go well he's God that's that and I can't question it it's okay to dig through it it's okay to wrestle through it why are other people groups why do they have to die I these are things that I wrestle with my own self and so this is one of the layers that I really wanted us to kind of peel back together so that we can understand the heart of God and understand the links that he is willing to go to to stay in this relationship that he entered in this covenantal relationship with

07the Israelites and boy we talk about where is God in situations in our life why did he turn his back on me why is he gone silent on me why do we turn our back on God when are we trust worthy when do we actually keep our word why do we sing I surrender all and lay everything at his feet at the altar on Sunday and by Sunday evening or lunchtime we've picked it right back up and we're full of worry and dread and anxiety and gossip and slander the waitress took too long refilling our drink I'ma do something about it she's not getting a tip the poor woman's not eaten tonight isn't it good to pull back the layers Jesus we thank you for your word to help us to understand our part in this relationship that we claim to be in with you our role

15our part help us to understand our role our part our commitment that we've made even to our spouse for saking all others what does that mean to us and better and in worse when I trust you because I agree with you and when I don't agree with you am I going to trust you in our relationship with our children can we be the safest place for them when the world is nothing but cruel and mean and vengeful and dishonest can we be a true place of safety a refuge believing the best in our children that I pray that we would take time to evaluate every relationship that we are in to feel the weight of responsibility in our part in our word and our commitment in our thoughts in our deeds in our actions do we do what we say to the words

25actions line up or are we teaching and modeling do as I say not as I do or do as I say and I will do what I want in secret holy spirit come convict us propellus come pellus to change and thank you that you are faithful and just to forgive us of all unrighteousness and to cleanse us of every sin that we admit and bring to you and we walk fully holy justly and rightly when we walk in your forgiveness and we extend that to those who need it just like we do we thank you and we praise you holy god the father the son and the holy spirit amen I have just the most beautiful music underneath daily audio bible that is home base that is
