Croydon Trims Yellow Box Junction, Saves Drivers Millions

This spot raked in nearly 2 million pounds and fines since it got painted in January 2017. Tens of thousands of motorists got hit with 160 pound penalties for barely entering the box. Campaigners Sam Wright, the yellow box guru, dug into it with a freedom of information request and exposed the cash haul. He even helped one driver beat a fine at Tribunal where the judge called the box way too large and ordered the council to drop similar tickets. The oversized design forced cars to wait forever just to avoid penalties with half the box spilling over a private office driveway. Motorists were fed up and the backlash built after Wright's videos went viral. Now the council has shrunk the box and swapped out part of it for keep clear markings to smooth traffic flow. They say it followed a review of the decade's old setup, especially since their balancing safety on tight budgets after going bankrupt in late 2020.
