Cowboys' Bland Extension: Bargain or Burden?

They freed up salary cap space and quickly handed out big extensions, including a four-year deal worth $96 million to guard Tyler Smith, and another four-year pact at $92 million to cornerback Duran Bland. Bland exploded in 2023 with nine interceptions, leading the league and returning five for touchdowns. But he struggled since, grabbing just one pick over the next two seasons, while dealing with injuries that limited him to seven games in 20. 24 and 12, the following year. Bleacher report analyst Braganian called Bland the most overpaid cowboy heading into 2026, pointing to his dip in production, and coverage issues despite being the sixth highest paid corner in football. He edged out defensive tackles, Quinn and Williams, and Kenny Clark as candidates for the label. The Cowboys reworked Clark's contract to drop his 2026 cap hit to $12.7 million, making it more manageable.

1:05Williams, a top run stiffer, has a $24 million annual average that feels fair, and he might even push for more soon. With a historically weak defense last season, the team is banking on new coordinator Christian Parker to revive Bland. If he bounces back, that extension could prove a bargain, otherwise it might haunt them down the line.
