0:00It's April 9th. This is Canada News Today, AI-powered stories from your city. I'm Cory with the story. Alberta's police washdog just cleared a Calgary cop from charges after he shot a guy swinging a sledgehammer during a break-and-call back on July 3rd, 2023. Officers rolled up to a four-small home on reports of someone breaking in and caught the suspects smashing a parked car with a heavy tool. They yelled for him to drop it, hit him with a taser a few times and pepper spray, but nothing worked. Before cops showed, the man had busted into a basement suite and chased down a witness, ramping up the chaos. He started swinging wildly, even clipping a bystanders ride, then charged right at an officer. That officer fired one shot, nicking the guy in the arm. He dropped the sledgehammer right away, got arrested, and needed surgery for a busted hand, but ended up stable. Acer dug into it, found enough to maybe press charges at first, but after chatting with the Crown prosecutors who said no dice, they're dropping any.

1:01Criminal case against the officer.
