Congressman Proposes Tariff Rebate for Americans

Representative Henry Queller, a Democrat from Texas, unveiled the American Consumer Tariff Rebate Act of 2026 last week. It aims to return money directly to households, making less than $400,000 in adjusted gross income. This comes right after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that former President Trump's tariffs were unconstitutional. Queller argues those tariffs acted like hidden taxes, jacking up prices on groceries, fuel, cars, building supplies, and other daily needs when businesses passed on the extra import costs. Families would feel real relief under the plan. A single filer could get about $1,020, heads of household around $1,530, and married couples. Filing jointly up to $2,040. Plus, there's an extra $125 per qualifying child.

1:04The rebates would be funded by the roughly $231 billion consumers already shelled out due to those tariffs. Calculations are based on taxpayer filing status in each district.
