Matthew 14:12-21

12 And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.

13 When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities.

14 And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.

15 And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals.

16 But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat.

17 And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.

18 He said, Bring them hither to me.

19 And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.

20 And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.

21 And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.

0:001st day, March 4th, 2026. Compassion by Jeremy K. Mullin, Pennsylvania, USA. Read Matthew 14, 12 through 21. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, He had compassion on them and healed their sick. When reading the familiar story of Jesus feeding the 5,000, we may be in such a hurry to take notice of Jesus' miracle that we miss an important detail. Jesus had compassion for others at a time when He needed compassion from others. Jesus had decided to spend time with His disciples away from the crowd after He learned that John the Baptist had been beheaded. But the crowd followed Jesus and was waiting for Him when He stepped out of the boat. If I had been in Jesus' shoes, I might have complained about the crowd or angrily demanded that they leave.

1:03But instead, when Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, He had compassion on them. Jesus had compassion on the crowd, even though He had just learned about His cousin's death and was hoping to spend some quiet time alone. But Jesus showed us that we can offer compassion in all circumstances. Even when we are going through troubles of our own, may we imitate our Lord's example and have compassion on others. God of compassion in our world filled with people who are hurting and in need help us always to imitate our compassionate Lord. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
