Durham News Today | 2 Min News | The Daily News Now! — Community Banks Offer Higher CD Rates. Machine-transcribed; use the interactive transcript above to jump the player to any line.
On March 14th, here's the latest out of Durham. If you have cash in a certificate of deposit at a major national bank, you are likely earning much less interest than you could elsewhere. A recent report from CD Valet shows community banks and credit unions paying nearly a full percentage point more on average. For example, mid-size institutions, with $1 billion to $10 billion in assets, offer about 2.9% annual percentage yield. While banks with over $50 billion in assets average just 2%, that gap widens even more for popular 12-month terms. Smaller community lenders hit around 2.72%, compared to just 1.66% at the biggest banks. On a $25,000 deposit, that means over $260 extra in interest over a year from the better rate. Sabers often stick with familiar big names and miss out on this difference, which adds up to real-loss money. Hundreds or even over $1,000.
Dollars on larger sums, like $100,000. Community banks compete harder for deposits, since they rely on them more than giants with diverse income from cards and investments. Rates are trending down lately, with 70% of recent changes being cuts, ahead of the federal open market committee meeting on March. 17th and 18th, 2026. Locking in a good rate now could protect against drops, especially with the federal funds rate at 3.50 to 3.75%. Percent. You do not need to switch your main bank to get better CDs. Just shop federally insured options nationwide. Check annual percentage yields by bank size, penalties, and consider ladders or no penalty versions for flexibility. For emergency funds, high yield savings accounts often pay 4-5% with no lock-up. The daily news now is made possible with support from our sponsor. Some people meditate.
