Colts Use Transition Tag on QB Daniel Jones

The Indianapolis Colts have slapped the Transition Tag on quarterback Daniel Jones while they keep negotiating a long-term contract. This is the first time a quarterback has gotten this tag since the Atlanta Falcons used it on Jeff George back in 1996. The tag guarantees Jones $37 million, $83,000 for the 2026 season. That's around $6 million less than the franchise tag would have paid. It also lets him shop for offers from other teams, but the Colts can match any deal he signs. Jones came to the Colts last offseason as the number 6 overall pick from the 2019 draft out of New York. He sparked an 8-2 start before in Achilles injury, knocked him out in week 14. The team struggled without him and ended 8-9. This move blocks the Colts from using the franchise tag on wide receiver Alec Pierce. Pierce has topped the league and averaged yards per catch the past two seasons.
