This is Global News Today, every region, every story, every day. Top ring golfer Colin Morakawa pulled out of the players' championship on Thursday after just one whole. The two-time major winner felt sharp pain in his lower back during a practice swing on the par 5-11th at Ponte Vedra Beach. He tried stretching and talked to his trainer but soon took a cart back to the clubhouse. Morakawa said he felt perfectly fine during warm-ups with no warning signs. He described it as a sudden deja vu moment from past issues where he just knew he could not swing through the pain. Despite wanting to play, he had no choice but to withdraw early in the tournament. Coming into the week, Morakawa was in strong form. He snapped the 28-month win list streak with a victory at Pebble Beach earlier this year. That was followed by a tie for 7th at Riviera and a tie for 5th at Bay Hill last week. He mentioned spinning the off-season building a stronger body, but this back problem echoed older troubles that had not flared up lately.
Morakawa noted his back feels tender now, but he can move around if he avoids swinging or heavy activity. He knows the recovery steps and expects it to take some time. He became the second withdrawal at the players after Ryan Fox bowed out due to illness before his T-time. Since Morakawa had already started, no replacement was added to the field.
