About this episode
This week I’m diving into the science of cold water swimming with Dr Heather Massey, a Senior Lecturer in the Extreme Environments Laboratory at the University of Portsmouth, where she spends a lot of her time researching the science of cold water immersion. She’s published a number of studies that make up some of the nascent scientific research into the benefits of cold water swimming for physical and mental health. We talk 101 about what is ‘cold’ water, what are the mechanisms behind how it works, what do people think happens v what actually happens in cold water, what do we need to be mindful of, and what her laboratory is currently studying. We briefly also touch on heat acclimation at the end of the podcast.
Heather is a Senior Lecturer in Sport, Health and Exercise Science and member of the Extreme Environments Laboratory and Clinical, Health and Rehabilitation Research Team (CHaRT) at the University of Portsmouth. She is also an honorary researcher at Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and has a varied profile of research studies. These involve the preparation, selection and support of humans in extreme environments (hypoxia, heat and cold). More recently (as mentioned) her team is now investigating the impact that these environments have on health conditions.
