Cold Case Murder Trial: Brothers on Trial

0:00On April 20, two brothers in their late 50s and 60s are finally on trial for brutal murder from 42 years ago in North London. Michael Stewart, now 57, and Anthony Stewart's 60 were just 15 and 18 when they allegedly ambush civil servant Anthony. Litter and an East Finchley Alley on May 1, 1984. Litterler, 45, suffered fatal head injuries from blunt weapons and died at the scene. The attack happened late at night after Litter left East Finchley Tooth Station, around 12.18 am. He still had his briefcase, 80 pounds cash and cards, suggesting Robert's panicked and fled. This came during what prosecutors call a spree-targeting loneman they thought were gay, part of their so-called hobby of violence. For decades, the case went cold, despite TV appeals like Crime Watch. No solid leads until their younger brother Daniel, 10 at the time, came forward on the 29th anniversary after a family rift. He claimed both brothers confessed involvement to him over drinks.

1:02Police reopened it in 2022, using bugs and cars and Michael's home. They heard alleged admissions, including Michael showing a girlfriend the spot and saying it was a robbery, gone wrong. Their sister later told cops about their history of queer bashing. Prosecutors say an anonymous 12.22 am emergency call, sounding young and concerned, was likely Michael after the attack. The brothers from East Finchley deny murder, and the Old Bailey Trial continues Tuesday bringing closures to a long, cold case.
