Cobb Lane's Next Chapter: Demolition Complete

Nearly four months after a massive fire gutted three-histored buildings on Cobblane in Birmingham's five-point south neighborhood, Demolition Crews have torn down almost everything. The blaze hit on Halloween, October 31st, destroying a 1901 Victorian house in two early 1900s apartment buildings, known as the Dianne apartments and Cobblane apartments. Cobblane got its name from Virginia Cobb, who ran a popular restaurant there from the 1950s until her death in 1987. By the early 2000s, the spot turned into a lively hangout with bars and eateries like the Blue Monkey Lounge and J. Clyde, though most closed. By 2020, firefighters rushed to the scene just before dawn, battling flames that started in the vacant Haskins Williams residence and jumped to the neighbors. They got the main fire out there Friday, but it kept smoldering into Saturday. In January, the City Council greenlit the Demolition because the damage was so bad.
