Coach Sendek's Kentucky Connection: A Full-Circle Moment

0:00On March 20, Herb Sendeck spent four pivotal years as an assistant coach at Kentucky under Rick Patino in the late 1980s and early. 90s. That time Monsters head coaching career at Miami of Ohio in 1993, but his favorite memory has nothing to do with wins or recruits. It turns out Patino played matchmaker for Sendeck, setting him up with the woman who became his wife. 30 years later, they're still together, making that personal connection the highlight of his Lexington days. Sendeck's path to Kentucky started humbly after playing Division III basketball at Carnegie Mellon. He coached high school in Pittsburgh, then joined Patino at Providence as a graduate assistant before moving to the Wildcats. He calls it an all-in experience that demanded everything but felt like a dream. During his stint there, Sendeck helped recruit a young Mark Pope from Washington State. Though Pope initially went elsewhere before transferring to Kentucky, Sendeck remembers him as bright, engaging, and genuinely kind, a friendship that stuck.
