Civil Service Dissatisfaction: A Growing Concern

Just 64% called their workload acceptable, while more than one in four reported a poor work-life balance. Only 39% fell satisfied with their pay and benefits, and fewer than two-thirds rated themselves as 90 to 100% — productive. Meanwhile, office attendance lags behind pre-pandemic levels, even as the civil service hit count has swelled to 554,000 workers, upsharply from 384,000 before the Brexit vote in 2016. Just 58% expressed pride in their department, or would recommend it as a great place to work, with 12% planning to leave. Within a year, many citing unmanageable workloads. Critics have seized on these results to highlight a troubled culture. The chief executive of the taxpayers' alliance described parts of the civil service as rotten, pointing to generous pay rises, pensions, and job.
