He created his own style, called Chun Cook Doe, and led a federation that trained thousands to black belt level. Black belt magazine honored him with the highest 10th degree rank. Growing up poor in Oklahoma, born March 10, 1940, he moved to California as a kid. After high school, he joined the Air Force in 1958, picking up judo and tang sudo while stationed in Korea. Back home, he built a chain of martial art studios with celebrity students like Steve McQueen, who pushed him toward acting.
