Chinyelu's NBA Draft Decision Looms Over Gators

0:00On May 1st, Fortigator's basketball got their roster mostly locked for the 2026-27 season, but they're holding their breath. For Star Center, Rubin Chenelu, the 6-foot-10, 265-pound big man declared for the 2026 NBA draft back in April while keeping his final year of college eligibility. ESPN's Jeremy Wu just dropped his top 100 prospects list, ranking Chenelu 43rd overall in 6th among peer centers, then mocked him. To the Denver Nuggets at Pick 49 in the second round, Chenelu balled out in his second season with the Gators, grabbing 11.2 rebounds per game to rank 4th nationally and setting a Florida. Recorded with 19 double doubles, he's the first Gator in 50 years to average double figures on the boards, plus he hit a career high 10.9 points per game and 1 block, each outing. His 3.9 offensive boards ranked 9th in the country, earning him naysmith defensive player of the year and SEC defensive player of the year honors.

1:04Coach Todd Golden spoke out last month, saying the team hopes Chenelu returns to team up with front court studs, Thomas Hall, and Alex Condon. Golden admitted they pivot if he stays in the draft, maybe adding size elsewhere since no one fully replaces a unique talent like Rubin, but he's, crossing his fingers for the senior year reunion. Chenelu, from Enigul Ajiti, Nigeria, transferred from Washington State before his 2024-25 sophomore year and helped fuel. Florida's national championship pushed that season, averaging 6 points and 6.6 rebounds over 40 starts. He tested the NBA waters last off season, but came back to develop, and it clearly paid off big time. With the draft set for June 23rd through 24th at Barkley Center in Brooklyn, the gators stay ready either way, eyes locked on. Whether their defensive anchor runs it back, or takes his shot in the league.
