Charges Filed in Fatal Pulp Mill Accident

Two years after a 30-year-old mechanic from Edmonton died on the job at a Northern Alberta Pulp Mill, safety charges have finally been filed. The man was working under a heavy caterpillar machine, propped up on wooden blocks when it suddenly shifted, causing fatal injuries. This month, investigators announced five charges under the Occupational Health and Safety Act against passive-setter equipment, West Fraser Mills and West Fraser Mills operating a slave-lake pulp. His family describes him as a devoted son, brother and skilled worker who loved fixing machines and put in long hours. His mother shared that the past two years have been filled with grief and tough questions about what went wrong that day in slave-lake. Among the allegations, the companies allowed the machine to be elevated on wood blocks, permitted work on the drive shaft and parking brake without help.
