Mount Royal University in Calgary faced a scary shelter in place alert, Monday afternoon after reports of someone walking around with a large knife. Police swarmed the campus with 17 units and 30 to 40 officers and folks were told to stay put shortly before 4 p.m. It turned out to be a false alarm. The guy was just the campus chef heading to work, but he ended up in custody with possible charges coming. The school admitted their emergency alert tools didn't fire on all cylinders during the chaos. They sent out messages through the MRU Now app, emails, and social media, but some students and staff missed them because the app can hibernate on. Phones, if it's not used often, students, professors, and employees, vented frustration online, saying they felt out of the loop amid the confusion. Schools get that saying a big police presence can rattle people, so they're pointing everyone to the MRU Wellness Center for support.
