Bundaberg Flood: Emergency Alert Issued

Bundaburg is facing its worst flood in more than a decade, forcing residents to evacuate homes and businesses, and emergency alert went out this afternoon as the Burnett River heads toward a peak of over 7 meters overnight. Access between North and South Bundaburg will soon be cut off. Officials expect the river to hit 7 meters around 2 or 3 this afternoon, leading to bridge closures. The mayor is pushing everyone to get out right away, with the worst still about 12 hours off. Locals are feeling the stress, but pulling together. One resident rushed home to pack after learning her place flooded badly in 2010. Others have lifted belongings high, stocked food, and leaned on friends for shelter, haunted by events like the 2013 flood that hit. Business is hard. Dams across the catchmen are spilling heavily. Paradise Dam, west of town, hit over 200 percent capacity, but is working just as planned, with no safety worries. At its height, it released five times its normal flow every day.
