BUCKS POSTCAST: Bucks Fall Short Without Giannis | Cavs OUTLAST Milwaukee Late

About this episode

The Milwaukee Bucks came up short against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday night, falling 123-116 in a tightly contested battle. With Giannis sidelined due to a knee injury, the Bucks turned to Kevin Porter Jr., who led the team with 25 points. Despite a back-and-forth effort throughout, Cleveland made the key plays late to seal the win. With the loss, Milwaukee drops to 28-40 on the season. Brandon Sneide and Brian Butch break down what went wrong, how the Bucks responded without Giannis, and what this means moving forward.

If you're not get caught up on the daily show with Justin and Camille and Frank Madden, and make sure you hit that notification bell, hit get notified when we go live and we're live right now, but you're talking about a seven point loss to a mostly healthy Cleveland Cavalier team. We go, we face Cleveland, we beat Cleveland very, very luckily with a 0.1 second difference on the shot clock, but it was a different game for the Milwaukee Bucks this time around. Now they did win Sunday afternoon against the Indiana Pacers, but they do fall tonight to Cleveland, up and down game.

They got down early in this one, but she fought their way back kind of back and forth, but it's been the story, the same story all season long. It's just that one moment, that one quarter, that one stretch, that dooms Milwaukee, and that's certainly what happened tonight. Let's get into your thoughts, put you after a 123, 116 loss. Yeah, are there moral victories? No, there's not moral victories, but no, yeah, no miles, Turner, and you get down 15. Yeah. We've seen this group collapse. They didn't collapse. Matter of fact, they came back and they fought back and they actually took the lead in the first year in the second quarter, and they cut 15 points in a matter of, what was it, five minutes, four minutes, like it was, it was one that, we were a matter of four minutes, they got, they, they, it was a 16 point turnaround. And that to me, it's not necessarily a turning point, but that to me is the moral victory of the game is, and again, I'm not a big moral victory guy, I get that, but I didn't think

this group was going to do that in that moment. I was like, okay, you're showing me the fight you need. Now, I think a lot of that was because you had California, Kevin Porter Jr. out there. He's been fantastic, again, with 25 and tennisists, like the ball moves when he's there, they do a good job with them. But that, yeah, that's kind of my overall. And then obviously, I think that, you know, you look at, you know, the day here was the Masters, three that he had in the corner, that kind of extended it late in the fourth, but overall, like, again, and we know, like, with no Yanis, Brandon, this team isn't good. Like, it's so obvious, I mean, it's really hard, like playing with Yanis, with Yanis, but she, they're, they're not very good. But it was an interesting game because you mentioned it. They fall down early, 14 points from James Harden in the first quarter, and I'm thinking to myself, but you, when that, that first quarter ended, I'm like, oh, boy, this is going

to be one of those games where you can't stop James Harden and Donovan Mitchell is going to go off. And then Evan Moby is going to go out. And certainly they did. I mean, Evan Moby and James Harden, each with 27 points on the night, Donovan Mitchell had 19 Sam Merrill old, old, old friend of, of the Milwaukee Bucks was 17 in the starting lineup. So I thought it was going to be one of those games. But then the second quarter, man, the Bucks just let it fly. They went back to their old, they're old mantra of just letting it ball, the ball fly. They went on an 11 oh run and they were a plus 14 in that second quarter. Yeah. It's a 12 three pointers, but she in that second quarter, and they made eight of them. Now that's not always going to be the case, right? Like that's not always going to be the case. But when you don't have Yanis, you've got to generate some offense and they moved the ball. And that was the thing. Finding guys that were open. Finding guys that were open. Kevin Porter, Jr. Ryan Rounds, a big part of that quarter, Bobby Portis coming off the bench. He was a big part of that that that quarter for the Bucks as well. I believe he finished three of seven from three point range. So it was one of those games that not a great first quarter. Okay.

Let's wash it. Go to the second quarter. It's better. But then you get into the third quarter and then it's kind of the same thing, but combined in the from the first and second quarter. The calves jump out, you know, they get out and an eight oh run, Cleveland did. And then you're like, man, here we go again, like you just can't string together. Ten quarters in a row. But then the Bucks, Kevin Porter, Jr., mostly with 11 points in that third quarter. He would get the scoring going and the Bucks would kind of turn things around. They would go in with a little bit of a lead. And again, you held James Hardin at 19 points coming into that into halftime. He exited the third quarter with only 21. So they only allowed him to score two points in that quarter. So that was huge. But then again, you go right back to where you kind of fall apart and it's always one stretch in that fourth quarter. I will say this though, without Janice Butchie without Miles Turner, I thought that what I saw from Milwaukee, you mentioned it, there's no moral victories. Cleveland's really good. Like they're going to, they're going to be there. You gave them every and there just came off an embarrassing loss to Dallas.

So like they needed, shouldn't say needed. I mean, they're 42 and 27, but, but, but, but, but needs not the right one, but there's a statement that is sure, like there just is. When you have an embarrassing loss as a player, it's game, you can't wait for the next game to happen because you need to go out there and you need to perform. And that's the reality of what this calf's team had in front of them. Janice is supposedly going to miss the next week, Butchie, okay, it's a knee hyper extension for Janice. We talked about it on Sunday. It was an awkward landing. He was taken out of the game from a dunk. He just landed awkwardly on it. It looked much worse than it turns out to be according to Doc Rivers. The imaging is good, but they are going to sit him. He's going to be re-evaluated in a week. The bucks now, Butchie are six and a half games behind the Charlotte Hornets for the play in tournament. I don't know if there's any bucks fans out there that had any real aspirations over the last week of getting into that play in tournament. But that's all but pretty much done for, right?

I mean, you're 68 games into the season now. So if you do the quick math, they only have 14 left. Do you just sit them? Is he done for you? I mean, for me, Butchie, he's done. I'll give you my quick answer. Like, there's no reason. For multiple reasons, there's no reason to bring him back. But you, I don't know if you caught his words at the end. I mean, I get, I get why it's funny, but you get, you hear his words at the end of the game at his locker room. And he says he doesn't care what the score is, what the record is. He wants to play. The bucks got a step in and put their foot down for these last four two. Yeah, I mean, that's the reality of it. The reason I'm laughing is because I didn't need to see him back before, I didn't need to see him back before I sure as heck, don't need to see him now. Like when, and this is why I don't care how healthy you are, I don't care how healthy you are. When you're coming back from injury, you are going to overcompensate. It's the reality of what it is. And this was a frequent, but there's another way you're going to get hurt.

And I think that is where we're at with it. And for him to be fully healthy means he's done for the year. I mean, even during the game, last, what was, what is today Tuesday, I'm all, I'm in Portland with the badge. So I'm all over. Yeah, you're moving around. You're moving around a little bit. You're not going on. It was Sunday. We did it Sunday. Sunday. He was trying to argue to go back in the game. And you could see the before, you could see the former guy say, no, Janice, you're out. Like we can't let you go back in. Like that's what needs to come from the front office. That's what needs to come from the coaches staff. That's what needs to come from everybody. You are done. We don't need you right now. Like this is where it's at, like, and I think that's part of it. You're not playing for anything, right? Like you're six and a half games back with 14 left in the season. Like Charlotte just dominated there. I forgot who they played today, but they won by like 30 points. Like they, you're not catching them. Like it would have to be a historic, you know, melting apart, falling apart for Charlotte to get. Yeah, beat Miami by 30, like you would have to, and then you would have to go on a stretch.

And oh, by the way, Hey, Bucks, I know you're struggling. I know you want to keep playing. You got a four game West Coast road trip lined up. So like, the odds are definitely stacked into the box. To me, there's no benefit on bringing Janice back. I know the type of competitor he's been covering him for all these years and who he is and what he stands for. And we can appreciate it, but we can also understand it. It's time to just, just let it, let it, let it rest as the Bucks fall 123 to 116 coming up after our break. When did this one turn against the box? We mentioned they started off rough, but they fought back. So when did this one turn against the box and we'll hand out our locked on Bucks postcast player of the game coming up right after this on the locked on Bucks postcast. You are first listened of the day and thank you for making locked on the number one sports podcast network, a rough start for the bucks in that first quarter found themselves

down, double digits, but they did find a way to battle back and then it kind of fell apart again. Once again, late in this one. So let's turn into our turning point in the 123, 116 bucks loss time to reveal where the game was once or lost. It's the turning point. All right, but she is a rough start the credit to the bucks, though. They did battle back, hit a lot of their threes and just couldn't have enough gas. They're at the end of the game. So when did this one turn for you against the boxes? They fall by seven now 28 and 40 on the season. Yeah. I think it was this. You know, you look at it. It was about Jane. He made drills of three gets it a four point game. And then what happens Cleveland comes back down Max True's corner three gets it to seven with 339 left. I mean, there's a lot of points in the game that go back and forth, but bottom line is you're sitting there for the majority here going back between, you know, two point game. Obviously, there's a little bit where, you know, Cleveland pushes it to an eight point

with five minutes left, but they're still chipping away, chipping away. And I felt like, okay, like the fight is still there. But when it finally got to seven, I was like, all right, that's probably where this thing is at. And it was like, there just wasn't enough yet. And that was, you know, they were down by seven three 39 left. I thought that that corner three by Max True's was pretty important in this game. Yeah. I think I'm right there with you. I have the, it was 100 to 100 at one point in this game, but then Cleveland goes on that eight old run. Then after that, after they go up, they go, they go on a 15 to six run to be included in that was about the six and a half, six, 15 mark in this one. And that's kind of when I knew, okay, that was kind of, that was kind of the spot where Cleveland was like, okay, we got the horses like, let's finish this race a little bit. It was fun playing with the bucks, but after, you know, after they pulled away by going on that eight old run, I figured that was probably the end of it. And credit to the bucks, though, man, like I know a lot of fans, I know a lot of people are down. I know a lot of people are, you know, they've already given up and the bucks stress them

out. And they're not having fun. Like, it's still a team. Whatever we think of Doc Rivers, whatever we think of Bobby Portis for Ryan Rollins, those are the two that always seem to catch the most criticism, you know, Yannis at some points in the year. I mean, they are playing. And then that's a credit to, to the organization, to the coaching staff and to the players. So get them a little credit. They do lose though tonight, 123 to 116. Let's do a butchie. Let's get our locked on bucks post cast player of the game. This is the locked on player of the game. Well, it's an interesting game, butchie because the bucks had a lot of bounce scoring from their bench. Cleveland did not. Cleveland had all their scoring and they're starting lineup. And the bucks did two players, most notably Kyle Kuzmo with only three points, Jericho Sims is not a big score with four NTP, Tori and Prince with eight. But Kevin Porter Jr had a big game, the bucks bench had a big game. Cleveland's entire starting lineup, it felt like had a big game.

Who was getting your locked on bucks post cast player of the game? Okay. So before I do that, well, you know what? Let's do player of the game. Before we get out of here, I want to answer the two couple of questions on the chat here as well. I want to get them. But who's mind-jang and what he was able to do. I thought 30 solid minutes. I thought he brought great energy. And the reason I look at him for playing the game is there wasn't any give up. There wasn't it like there was always the competitor in him. And at this point in the season, we've said this, this group in Milwaukee, the bucks, they need to find who can be in their fox hole. Who can you play with, Yannis? We know that phrase. We know Yannis has got there, but like, you know, we know that they've built some chemistry. But I want to see a guy continuing to battle, continuing to learn, continuing to try to get better. And that was my take. I thought Pete Ants was phenomenal as well. But, you know, I think I think I think I'm not jangling what he was able to do. I think is is my player of the game. Yeah. He was wrote, it wrote down as my number one as well, the three point shooting today from

who's in a couple of those one as the shot clock is, is expiring. He takes a dribble to his left and off balance, rushing a shot. I thought he was, I thought he was fantastic. I mean, you look at what Evan Mobley did for me. I mean, I don't want to go against a buck not getting the lock down bucks post cast player of the game, but 27 and 15. I mean, that dude is just, you know, six of them on the offensive side. We already know that the buck struggle with offensive rebounds. But Evan Mobley was was just the force. We didn't see him last time these two teams played. He's one of the more underrated players. So I'm going to go Evan Mobley, but Uzman was my Milwaukee buck one as well. Bobby Portis an honorable mention 19 points again off the bench for Bobby and and really got some of that scoring to get the bucks back into the game in that second quarter. So I thought Bobby was was instrumental in this one as well. Let's get in a few of these questions, few of your thoughts here on the lock down bucks post cast as Milwaukee falls one 23 to one 16. Cruton says here, but you how in the world is it 27 free throws to seven free throws when

the game mattered? That was terrible, but I felt so good about Jane and we just look good. Just need to finish when we are ahead. So he's asking the 27 free throws to the seven free throws. I have an answer. Maybe I'm wrong. It's James Harden like that you're just that's what's going to happen. Yes, but you also took nine more threes. Yeah, when you're a three point shooting team and that's what they were the majority of this game. I mean, they made 20 of them and I think that's the important thing, but they took 45. So over half, yeah, over half of their shots were from three. They took 88 total shots and 20 of 45 from three. When you are a three point heavy team in a game like today, tonight, you're not going to get to the free throw line as much. That's just that's just the reality of how that goes. Now, you know, the cat, yeah, the cows, they took 36. There's a difference of nine. James Harden does play a little bit of a fact in that I agree, but just in general, based on what you've done, you're nine attacks that you can get to the rim or find ways to create.

Even if you get there five of those times of the nine, that's 10 extra free throws. Change the story a little bit. So I think you're a three point. Yeah, and it's plays that's a little different. 26 combined free throws between Harden and Mitchell. Let's get into one more here. This is from Mike Butchie. How can a head coach not know how many timeouts his team has? Doc is a total quack. Okay. Doc Rivers, this is icing on the cake here, Brad, because when I look at this, it's doable. I will give him benefit of the doubt. Like to not know your timeouts, heat of the moment, situation, your teams coming back. You want to try to find a way, you quickly signal, but come on. Like, as I said, this is icing on the cake for me. Not like you can't do this on top of everything else. Like your teams fight to come back. You can't do this. Like, I mean, the game was probably over anyway, but I mean, I'm not saying I can't have,

but Doc, you can't do it. Not with all the other, I'm going to be nice and I'd say the words I want to say, like, not with all the other dumb stuff you do. Don't do this on top of it. I just thought it was comical for the year more than anything. Yeah, it's a microcosm of the season. Yeah, it's battling and it's a tough one. The box falling. No, Yannis in this one. Again, as we mentioned, no miles, Turner in this one. Yannis will not be on the West Coast road trip for the box. And that's when you'll find us next is things just never seem to get easier for the box, because they keep putting themselves deeper and deeper into the season hole. They fall now 28 and 40 on the season after this loss. And we will be back on Thursday night. They're in Utah. They'll start a four game West Coast road trip out there. The last one of the year. And that will be on Thursday night. That's when you'll catch Butchie and myself back on these airwaves. That'll do it for tonight's show. My thanks to each and every one of you. Thank you guys for tuning in.

Thank you for making locked on box your first listen of the day. And thank you for making locked on the number one sports podcast network before we get out of here.
