Hello, hello, hello, it's so nice to see you and I'm trying to figure out how this episode came about I think it came about with just as texting and me saying hey do you want to be back on the show and you saying what would I talk about and I'm like what are you talking about this person who you love and you will tell us how you love this person and how many times you've seen this person and it is Alicia who are we talking about? I want an only Bruno Mars. I am a fan. I've been called a

2:10super fan by at least one person but I think there are people that are still you know even more fanatical than me. When did you first hear Bruno Mars and how did you become like the fan that you are? Wow so I first heard him you know it was it was I'm thinking it was like 2009 right like nothing on you. I think I perked up and started to you know pay more attention when you know the full album came out the first album. We're in my merch today. Do whaps and hooligans first album with just the way you are. It was kind of a slow maybe like a slow build-up for me but I just always every time I heard any song

3:14I was like you know I like that. I like that Bruno Mars. Fine chap he is. What part other people? What did you like of them? Yeah that's a great question for me. His music it gave me a feeling like the feeling like we're 80s kids and it gave me it just reminded me of like music that I grew up with that was fun and happy and you know I always say if you can't and I know that a lot of people love him and I know a lot of people have you know they're like yeah whatever but I feel like if you can't find one Bruno Mars song to love or appreciate then you're probably like that in some way because you know there's and I also if you haven't seen him live you know I think there's

4:16there's there's a difference I mean he's he's got you know he's he's he's an incredible vocalist instrumentalist all of that but there is a difference when you hear him live like truly the songs come alive and if you haven't experienced him live when you're still not feeling anything after seeing him live you're definitely dead inside. There you go. How many time did you see him Alicia? I've seen him eleven times over but that's like over a decade or more because I went to my first show in 2014. So you are a superfan? I mean if that's what I don't know what the you know the number of account you know puts you into superfan I mean some of the some of my buddies that I go to shows with well one in particular has seen him I think like 35 times so I'm like super you know she's surpassed me and not sure there are others I mean there are others in the stand I mean there's people that you kind of see and run into on social media

5:20like I know there's there's a girl I think like she's been to like a hundred shows or close to a hundred shows so that's why I'm like you know yeah that's a lot but there's always somebody who's done more. That's fun though because it's like I mean it's like any interest that you really really have that you start to budget for it and I guess like you budget for like Bruno Mars stuff it's like so Noah's album is coming out I know he's touring or like whatever and it is a part of your economy which I think it's absolutely yeah it's like travel and I also like to combine my latest things I like to combine travel with concerts if I can but yeah it becomes just something that yeah you budget for and we have a saying amongst us in my little kind of fan girl group you know just like kind of group of us that have met at shows over the years and became friends and have gone to more shows together and we just we're just always like if you stay ready you don't have to get ready so how would you

6:21describe me obviously he's had he has been an artist for a while so he's had different sort of influences and things throughout the years but how would you basically describe the tenor of his music I mean he is I mean you know the second album on an orthodox jukebox you know I think that title and phrase describes him because he can be all over the place and crossing different genres but I think for me it always comes back to you it's kind of what I was saying earlier about music that I listened to as a child is there's always going to be that pop element there's always going to be that R&B element so I think that's kind of one of the things that I like about him is that you can't just put him solidly in one category and he's talked about this in early interviews you know when he first became famous you know that like I think it

7:24was Motown Records he was signed with and they dropped him because they didn't know where to place him so and I yeah I can appreciate that you know he got his start as a baby Elvis impersonator yes so he's been but I like that idea because it's that hit the show has always been a part of his art that he putting on a show like his super bowl performance yeah I have not seen him I want to see him this time and I was kicking myself because the tickets immediately all got for the the local shows in DC all got immediately bought up by resellers and it went from like a hundred something dollars a ticket which I could have handled to like three hundred dollars a ticket and I have to take my child with me so I cannot do that are you going to these shows if this is going to shock everyone but as of as of the time of this recording I am not going to the

8:28romantic tour that comes here in May even though I said what I said earlier about staying ready and being ready I just you know few life things have happened that I'm not ready I was not ready this time and we knew that you know we knew that album was coming out soon and you know again the girls and I have joked about like you know when he comes back he's going to come in you know like a wrecking ball and you know some one of the girls in our we have a group chat and she was like yeah I bet he's gonna drop the album and tour dates in the same week and that's exactly what happened and I you know I still got in the queue and everything we were all in the queue together and we you know we kind of work things out and people are like hey do you want something do you want to grab you know we'll you know them or each other or do whatever we have to do right um but as I was watching you know the price is like I was just like I just knew I was like you know what I'm not going to be able to do this this time unless something happens because we always say you know wait you know

9:30over till it's over so I could be gifted tickets at this point I can do some contests at this point um this point it would suck because I wouldn't be able to go you know sit with my friends that I usually go with but still you know to just be there but um yeah it's kind of weird it's like for the first time in over a decade when he's in town I won't be going and that's weird I'm gonna definitely have FOMO but the one thing is that so I'm I've gotten really used to seeing him at MGM which is a much smaller intimate venue and really quite frankly like spoiled me spoiled all of us um I'm not thrilled at all about the stadium venue like I don't really do stadium shows just in general for any concerts that I go to any artist I just prefer smaller more intimate venues um but he will typically for the smaller venues like they use the yonder pouches and they lock our phones

10:32so you can't record because his thing has always been I want everybody to be in the moment and you know just put your phones down and dance and have a good time um and he can't do that the stadium tour that's 65 000 people so I know there's gonna be great footage and I'm counting all my girls to send me all the footage post all the footage um so yeah I know it's shocking to everyone that I'm not going and I'm I've had the moment the you know the tour got announced I had people texting me your boys and child like you think I don't know this we we who against we know things before everybody else but yes I know he's coming no I'm not going yes I know it's shocking well boo well boo but but I understand though but I know you'll see him again oh for sure yeah and this tour you know and he do uh anderson packed um you know who he collabed with on silksonic he said in the studio the

11:39Bruno runs things into the ground and I always thought that was funny because you know it's just about his perfectionistic nature um you know with a lot you know his last major tour you know 24-carat like I was lucky that I saw him on that tour but the times that I've seen him more recently have pretty much all been jam either here locally or in Vegas when he did silksonic and um I did oh we had to see silksonic it had to happen yeah that was a whole like that was a vacation you know combined into one that's amazing well you know if there's ever gone travel she gone travel if there's an opportunity get on the plane and she can go she's gonna go Alisha hosts the most magnificent pictures of here's me and gree um here's me where did you learn and back ago that was just like she just came over from London and hung out with you where was it you went part of Ibiza Ibiza

12:42now we were not partying partying it was a date party concert yeah it's a concert but yeah in Ibiza and I was like oh okay so this is what we're doing which is jet nobuna Ibiza and when I say that I'm completely envious because I would love to be jetting to uh anywhere that sounds amazing my question is like Ibiza which is like a store that sells tie-dye in the mall 26 is definitely I mean it was like for two years I would say 2023 2024 really for two years I kind of went you know I did more trips than usual yeah this this year is like way dialed down so you guys couldn't stop teasing me no no but I lost my train of thought I lost my train of thought earlier because I was talking about the shows locking up the phones the footage basically you were saying that it's been different experiences and even you you would have gone

13:43were you able to go this year but it's not exactly the venue and I'll see him again because oh running things into the ground there's gonna be multiple legs I'm sure of this tour like this is just the North American and European tour you know he's gonna do I'm sure he's gonna do a South American tour I'm sure he's gonna do an Asia you know a Southeast Asia he's got to hit Hawaii his home state that's not on this initial list of days and so you know who knows maybe I can save up for vacation and see him in Hawaii that would be awesome and I was gonna say Alicia we're totally at making fun of you we wish we were you I love I mean you all probably aren't Facebook friends or actually real life friends with Alicia but let me tell you you are one of the I aspire to be you in the very best way because you live life and you do the things and and it's really like amazing like I love what looking at your pictures when you just come back from some

14:45ways I love it thank you and when we think traveling to a show I'm like am I going to Wolftrip well see but no listen I understand that and I relate to that so this is like you know maybe I didn't choose the fan girl life the fan girl life chose me because this is how it started my first show with Bruno I actually crossed state lines because I couldn't get show I couldn't get a seat it was like what were they calling it back then Nisa and I think it's called something else now you know the names he's been he was changed all the time but whatever the local like DMV show was it wasn't right in DC it was in Virginia and that was sold out but there were still tickets for Hershey Park PA and I was like well that's not far why not drive and just go for a weekend and get you know get a hotel and that's how it started you know Nisa I love Hershey okay Nisa

15:50previllian is now jiffy Lou blive thank you I couldn't remember the name I knew it wasn't Nisa previllian by there I'm trying to think where I've gone I think I went in 97 I'm my boyfriend of the time that I went to Jersey from York to see Lilith Fair and then I drove from York the next year to marry weather two hours not that far I've flown to from from West Palm Beach to Atlanta to see crowded house and I've that's probably the furthest that I traveled my travel is more like between Maryland and Pennsylvania or Baltimore DC and if you know people who live in Baltimore city who are afraid of losing their parking that's far to go percent we don't like that far so let's talk about the new album and tell me how this is different than some of his more recent albums

16:52so this album I and I kind of predicted that we were going to get a little bit more of a Latin flare and let you know and nod to his Puerto Rican heritage at least that side of his heritage is Puerto Rican and Philip you know for those who don't know so I mean the opening track it's like it's right there and I was like yes and if you haven't seen the video for the that track risk at all please go to YouTube and watch it not just little Leslie but everyone listening he's going to listen to this podcast here you go watch that video it's just a beautiful work of art it's beautifully done I think it's you're kind of seeing him in a way that you haven't seen him before because he can definitely be you know the showman and um you know he can be silly he can be whatever but this is like it's it's just beautiful just go watch it um so he's brought him huh

17:54no you can say that's my favorite song on the album yeah it is mine too it is mine too so I my reaction to the album and it's only been out for a week but my reaction so far has been it's kind of a it's giving like some of his earlier vocal style like from from duos and liggins but it's also giving the Latin he's always going to give you some R&B it's also feeling like silksonic 2.0 or like some of these songs were like in the silksonic vault and we're getting to get them on his fourth solo album that's how I felt so and some things felt reminiscent to me other songs of his and also felt reminiscent and when I think reminiscent I mean like the vibe we have one song that sounded so much like um backstabbers um five oj's or just reminded me of that that that filly soul sound yes um you do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do what do they do

19:01of the song that Leslie wanted to dance with with my dad at her wedding but she did not we had stuck with Josh Grovans he raised me up which was great Hey, what do you mean got stuck with? I know this is gonna go down a tangent. Yeah, no, I love him. I love that song. It just that I was, I want to do something funny and quirky and cool. I want to start with like, like endless love or something syrupy and then go in the back. So that's down there. Did your dad shut it down? Like who shut that down? And I shut it down. He just went down. He shut down everything. He shut it everything out. We did raise me up. And then he was not like super, people were gonna understand that he was ill. And he was thinner than he usually had been. But he looked great still. Am I wetting? And we did, he raised me up and everyone's like, oh no, because we're cracking up because we cannot remember the words. We're trying to stigma each other and we're like, something, something mountain. I mean, everybody thinks that we're crying. And we're like, oh, dad is ill. We're like, why is everybody upset?

20:02Something, something sees. So yes, if you already have a third moment. I love it, I love it. But yeah, there are songs that remind me, like Viscatal reminds me of the talking to the moon. Like that kind of, which I love that song. Very earnest. Very earnest. And it's funny, this is a question for you. Is he, here's personas, right? Like he has this persona that's very like, if you don't dance, I don't want you to be, you know, you just might be my girlfriend, but I need the booty. You can't find the beat. Well, if you can't find the beat, what's all that beauty? If you don't have a movie or booty or something like that, the line. And that's a great song too. But this persona of his that's very like cocky, like the 20 per carat magic, that persona. And then the Bruno Mars that does, you know, just the way you are and earner songs.

21:03Like if I were you, if I was your man, which is when I was your man, it's my favorite version of it. It's my favorite Bruno Mars song. And I can play it on the piano. It's one of the few things that can actually do it. Linda's Saturday to be with that song yesterday. Wow. I love it. Can meaning kind of? But anyway, that, but yeah, what do you think about the difference? Do they all like jive that some of his songs? Again, because I'm an actor. And I feel like he, this is what I feel. You can tell me if I'm wrong. I feel like he does these songs. And to me, it is like a character because he adds to me modern touches to older genres and older ideas. But the reason it works is because he knows who he is. So the things that he says, and it's even his like interjections and stuff in between makes sense because he knows who he's supposed to be.

22:08And I think he's also, you know, I think you're never going to know exactly because I think he's very private. But last week, last Friday night, when risk had all dropped at midnight, the girls and I were in our group chat and we were just beside ourselves because, and again, when you see the video, you'll understand. But he's private, you know, about his private life. But we do know publicly that he went through with a breakup recently of him, you know, his long time, but I think they've dated for like 12 years. I mean, they were living together, long time relationship. And risk at all is clearly about that. And then the video is clearly about that. When I was your man, actually, was about, you know, a shorter term breakup that they had, you know, early on in dating. So, but that's all he's going to give you.

23:09You know, he's never going to get, he's not going to go, you know, and talk about it in an interview or a podcast or anything. But for those of us, you know, in the fandom, they know that they were together for all these years. We were like, oh, we see it. And honestly, this is the first time I actually tiered was watching a music video because we know kind of the backstory behind it and like just down to like, you know, the similarity of the person who's playing the lead opposite him in the video and everything like it's wild. But, but I think, I think he's going to continue when to sort of give maybe these different characters through songs. I love it. Yeah, I don't, I think you're, you're just, you're not going to ever know him, know him, you know, unless you're in his inner circle. One of the things that I like about this, and Len and I have talked about this prior to this taping, is that there are people who I believe are wrong because they're bad critics who have said that he is a quote

24:12unquote, culture, because people don't understand. He has of many cultures. He is Filipino and Puerto Rican. He was raised in Vegas. He has so many and Hawaii. He has so many different things. So when people like, when it was announced, he had a Latin player to this thing, people like, he's not even Latin. It's like, you're stupid. And he is an appreciator, I believe, of music. Like for him and Anderson Pack to do that, soul train era, you know, sulksonic thing. He's not, a vulture says, I pretend the roots of this don't exist. And I am going to, pretending that K-pop is its own thing or really it is a, sorry K-pop people, when it, and it is a direct, not even homage, direct stealing and refocusing of black, R-M-B, and that Donnie Walberg gets mad

25:15if you don't mention new addition. And he goes, literally, that's where we came from. Yeah. So there's a bulturing, but also in that case, an appreciation, but Bruno Mars has always, to my, you know what I'm saying, I appreciate this music, which is why I am a gentle nod to, not just gentle nod, but a wink and a nod to the things that he is doing. He's not just going, I don't know where this music came from. No, no, no, he's always been clear. And that's why that culture, culture, conversation gets so old that I can't believe people are still on about it. But he has always given credit, acknowledgement, you know, direct acknowledgement of where his influences come from. I mean, I can remember him saying in an interview, like literally, he was like, it's why I'm here. It's why we're here. You know, like, so yeah, I find that conversation,

26:16that whole topic, just to be, just to be old. And ignorant, honestly, it's not really, I think that didn't even, Stevie Wonder actually, and I have a story about Stevie Wonder. We have, when we have time for it, one of my shows. I was like, I realized that was muted. You guys couldn't hear me, could you? I was like, no, no. It's okay. If you all know, and it's recording, I would mute it myself because I was getting down to the end of this water bottle, and it kept making crinkling sounds. So what I was doing, I think, was just like interjections. So, but nobody heard them, but that's okay. It's fine. Okay, but if you hear any dead spaces, that's when Lynn thought you could hear her. Okay, as you go. Okay, well, hopefully some of those interjections, you know, can come back around. Stevie Wonder, somebody actually asked Stevie Wonder about whether Bruno Mars is a, you know, cultural appropriator and culture vulture. And Stevie Wonder himself said, God gave me music to everyone to enjoy.

27:19And he was basically, I mean, I'm totally paraphrasing, but I remember he said that part about God, but he just basically went on to say, like, no. So, and Bruno has been very clear. Like Stevie Wonder is like his biggest, probably his biggest musical inspiration. And is it time for stories? Cause I have a good one. You all know this. So back in 2021 was the first time that I got to see Bruno front row. Thanks to a friend who wasn't able to go, and like sold me her ticket at a discount. This was one of the girl girls. And it happened to be my birthday weekend. And it was like first major for me, a first major like crowded thing that I was going to during the height, still the height of the pandemic.

28:19And I was having a high, like I wasn't supposed to go that night. Like I didn't have a ticket, but it came about like at the last minute and she was like, I really think you should go and enjoy yourself. You know, like my mom had passed away like a year and a half before, you know, so many things were going on. And I was like, oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. And I'm so glad I went because not only was it amazing to see him in front row for the first time and to just seeing him front row is like you really can see like how much he enjoys what he does. And I wrote a whole post about it on Facebook when it happened. But essentially I took a little thing on girl's side, little eight and a half violin, saying that it was my birthday and asking if he would sing to me. And I kept holding it up all night. And I knew he saw me, but Bruno being Bruno, you know, he's got to play with you a little bit. There was some dialogue during the show, you know, he was kind of like acting like,

29:20oh, you've been holding it up all night. All right, fine, I'll come read your sign. And so he read it and then he asked, what song? And I was so like, you know, out of body at the moment, I was like, I had had a song in mind, right? But I said, but you already sang it. And he said, I already sang it. All right, so I'm not going to sing, I'm not going to sing nothing. You got to be quick with me. And then he walked off and the crowd is like, oh, and I'm just like, what just happened? And his camera dies, like, got the big lens in my face, right? Like, it was crazy. And then again, Bruno being Bruno, like, you know, you should know, like he's not going to like leave you hanging like that. But I didn't know what to think, you know? He waits until like the very end of the show at that time, just the way you are is usually the encore.

30:23Or no, it's the song before the encore. Uptown Funk is the encore. Oh my gosh, Julian's out there, forgive me. I can't believe I just said that. We all know Uptown Funk is the encore. But anyway, so during just the way you are, he slipped in like a little Adlin, like happy birthday in the song. And then at the end of the song, they kind of broke it down. And then you can kind of hear a little key change kind of thing going on. And earlier in the evening, he had said that Stevie Wonder was in the crowd. And he had done some cover songs on the piano to Stevie Wonder. So now we're at the end of just the way you are. And he goes into, comes right over to me and starts singing, isn't she lovely? Oh, Lord, yes, you are going to be birthday, but didn't find you. I know, I know, I know.

31:23And that's for me not, you know, knowing what's like, he totally more than made up for it. Like anything that I could have asked for it, you know, it was like, come on. And Stevie Wonder, he's singing a Stevie Wonder song to me. And Stevie Wonder is in the building like, what is life right now? Yes, out, out. Jack, tell a very fun, nice, very good one like this. So my friend Melanie Spike Lee is her best, who's her favorite director sometime in the 90s. She had gone to a thing of Brooklyn, they haven't signed a book. And so she was really nervous, really nervous. So he's asking, he's kind of bored. And he's asking everyone, what's your name? Bob, right, Bob, what's your name? Denise, Denise. So he gets to her and she, her thought is in her head to scream her name at him, but he sees her. And she's a very pretty girl and he smiles. And she goes, Melanie. And he goes, oh, it just went to him and answered the thing. And the moment it's up,

32:27there was no reprieve. You were like, you lovely. She blew her moment to like have a conversation. That's hilarious. People have asked me like, what did you, did you cry? Did you do that? I was like, I was surprisingly composed. I was just really happy. And at that time, masks were still required at the shows. And I still had my mask on. And I was just still beaming. I'm sure he could see it in my eyes. And I actually, when he was done, and he does this thing and he'll joke about it too. I've seen him joke between songs. He's like, oh, you know, the old school players, they used to, they walk and then they got, he's like, he got to look back. He got to look back at him. So he's like, looking back at me, right? And I lowered my mask briefly. And I was like, thank you, you know, like, I keep you. Like, it was just, it was amazing. So of course, what do you do after an experience like that? You know, you're gonna go to another show. This is how we end up at 11 shows, people. And I've met some of the band, you know,

33:28some of the band members that people ask me, like, oh, if you met Bruno, no, I've never met Bruno. I would love to, of course, but, you know, I, I, yeah. That's what I was gonna ask, because you have pictures of his back up singers who are the hooligans, right? Are they the hooligans? The band is the hooligans, yeah. And then fans and the fandom were also called hooligans. But yeah, the, I've met, yeah, the majority of the band members I've met and including his brother Eric, who is his drummer, who's just a really, really kind, sweet guy, you know, like just, like, had conversations, like, and in between, you know, one of the shows, I think from 2020, like, yeah, when we went to Vegas, then we saw them again, when they came back here in later, a few months later, and he, you know, remembered us from Vegas, Eric did.

34:29And then when I met him again in 2023, and that's the, there's a picture of me, there's a picture of me with him where he's holding a sign that says Eric asked for a sign too. That was kind of like, it didn't sign jokes at the last time that I met him before. He had kind of jokingly asked for a sign. Oh, he knew that we had signs for him. So, but he actually reposted that picture of us on Instagram at the time, which was also, you know, fan girl excitement. But yeah, they've all just been super kind. They're just, you know, they'll sometimes just be walking around before or after the show, so it's not. There's nothing like extort Mary going on. It's just kind of like, I call them like these four as gum moments, you know, where you sort of happen to be in the right place at the right time. And they've all been really, really nice. I love. So Alicia, what's your number one? Thank you. I'm like in my brain going, that's the main thing. I wish I was there.

35:30What is your favorite Bruno Mars song? Do you have one? I know there's probably a lot. Yeah, that's so hard. It's like, do you have a favorite child? I don't have children. But locked out of heaven has been a favorite for a long time. Like, both the recording when it first came out, but then once I got to experience it live, like it's always been one of my favorites live because there's just, it's so high energy. And there's always a confetti drop and it's just like this magical moment where it's like, just, you know, euphoria. So that will always be a favorite. Often you have, when I mentioned risk at all, that's my favorite. From the psiloxonic era, I love put on a smile, which is really kind of a melancholy spot, but, you know, I can run. I just love his vocals on that. There are so many, like, it's really hard.

36:30And it's like, this is only four albums now. And this guy has got a lot more in him. So, but yeah, those are some of the favorites. He's just cool. Like, I, too, so I listened to the album, I think twice. And then I put on a, I actually did my knee, I'm in physical therapy for my knee and I did my knee exercises to this album to the romantic today, but I'm not feeling better. So I healed my knee, but I don't need therapy anymore. No, I wish. But yeah, it could have been the capacity. But I'm gonna say this though, I listened to a mix of his songs today. And so many hits, like, not that a hit is what defines you, but so many freaking hits. Yeah, as like, it's kind of like, it's definitely a touch. Yeah, and for me, it's the joy. Like, you feel, you feel the joy and the love that he puts into it.

37:30And again, that comes, that really comes alive, you know, during the, during the live performances. But I think with this, you know, getting back to your question, Lynn earlier about, like, characters, like, I think we're in a new phase. Like, he's, he's definitely growing up. You know, he's turned 40. He's had some losses, obviously. I think this, the new album, the romantic reflect that. That's amazing. I wanted to ask before we wrap up, if there was, not so much a favor, but one song. And this is hard to answer for a person who's video, who's, you know, career is so varied. But if you were saying, hi, you're a new person who's never heard Bruno Mars, where do you start? Either a song or an era or an album. All right, so I'm just representing myself here, okay? Not the whole fandom. This is just my opinion.

38:30I would start with, with the second album. I would start with an orthodox jukebox because it's, it is so varied. And I think that, you know, that captures him because he, he, he does and appreciates, you know, a lot of different genres. Oh, it was when I tried to tell you what your wedding song was. Oh, yeah. And she was like, I'm gonna have to get, what episode is that? I don't think it's, it's happening. I don't think it's gone on yet. Well done. But I think that was Sam's upcoming episode. We're not gonna reveal the topping, but I'm talking and I said, and she goes, well, this is our dance out for something. Nothing was it. She's like, it is my wedding. I think I know. I'm like, if it's so fun. It was one of the dumbest things I've ever said. I wouldn't even thinking. I think it's because I've been telling that story wrong in our family for 16 years. But it felt right to me and then it was like, who would know what happened at my wedding? Oh, I know me. And I was like, we're right. And I just remember because there's a video that somebody shot and I posted every year.

41:35So that's how I literally in my head. It's received. I superimposed a different song over that video. This is how wrong I was. Emma pulled out loud and wrong. That's what we call loud and wrong.
