Broncos' Payton Promotes Webb, Stays on as HC

At the annual NFL owners meetings in Phoenix, Arizona, co-owner and CEO Greg Penner made it clear. This was all Payton's call. No pressure from the top. The move came straight from Payton's playbook to keep Webb on the staff. After two strong years with 24 regular season wins and a trip to the AFC Championship, Webb was drawing head coaching interviews left and right back in January, promoting him to offensive coordinator with full play-calling sealed the deal. Penner sees it as the price of success, winning teams lose assistance to other squads every year. He said that thrilled to have Webb locked in, with full trust in his skills as they build around the second year quarterback. Payton ain't stepping back completely though. He'll handle weekly game plans and tossing suggestions during games, staying right there as the headman.
