Broncos Gain Cap Space, Restructure Cooper's Contract

They restructured outside linebacker Jonathan Cooper's contract by turning $10,200,000 of his base salary into assigning bonus. That move spreads the cause over the full length of his deal and frees up $8,200,000 in cap space for $20,26. His cap hit for this year drops from $14 million all the way down to $5,800,000. Cooper still gets pay the exact same total amount just a bit earlier with that bonus. Earlier, the team did a similar tweak with Guard Quinn Miners, which opened up $11,700,000 in space. Fans and analysts see this as smart housekeeping to stay flexible under the cap. So far, Denver has resigned or tendered 16 of their own free agents this off season.
