British Diver Dies in Indonesian Riptide

0:00On March 31st, a 45-year-old British diver named Robert Ladd has died during a solo dive of Gilly Air in Indonesia. He walked into the sea alone to tackle strong currents but got caught in a powerful rip tide and never came back up. Ladd, from West London, hit the water around 11am on March 24th. When he didn't resurface after about an hour, friends and local dive crews sounded at the alarm right away. That kicked off a massive search with marine police, military, navy air teams, firefighters and volunteers all pitching in. By 120pm, they pulled his body from 12 meters deep near the dive spot, but paramedics couldn't revive him with CPR. The waters there are notorious for fierce rip tides from the Indonesian through-flow, making solo dives extra deadly. Officials confirmed his death after first aid failed, and his body went to a hospital in Madaram for a post-mortem. Family and friends are devastated, sharing tributes online about the huge void he leaves behind.
