Bridge Upgrade on Highway 280 in Mountain Brook

0:00From Birmingham, this is your March 20th update. Construction crews are upgrading a bridge on Highway 280 near Pump House Road in Mountainbrook, Alabama. Starting this Friday, March 20th at 11pm, all lanes will close until 6am, Monday morning, weather permitting. The Alabama Department of Transportation is handling the work to improve traffic flow. The new bridge will include one lane in each direction, a center turn lane, and a sidewalk. This fits into a larger plan to widen Highway 280 between Interstate 459 and Lakeshore Parkway. The full project costs $50 million. Drivers will face disruptions with eastbound lanes closed through Monday, March 23rd. Westbound lanes reopen daily at 5am and close again at 11pm. Officials urge using U.S. Highway 280 to Shelby County as a detour and signs will guide everyone. This short closure is just one phase, paving the way for four lanes open by October 1st.
