As long as anyone can remember. And the strange thing is that, just in this area, in the Sea Islands, the descriptions of the Boo are so consistent, even from people who have never heard of this dream-creature before. If it is a dream. But if it is a dream, no one has it for very long. They get rid of it, or… or the other way around.
