BONUS: Ryan Day Breaks Down Freshman Phenom Legend Bey's Debut

0:00All right, welcome to another special bonus episode. Now that we are in season mode, there is so much to talk about. Get a chance to look back a little bit at the Buck Island 56-3 win over Ball State. And yes, even to look ahead now to the game against the Texas Long Horns this Saturday, well, how's the players and coaches no longer need to feel like they haven't even thought about it. They gotta just focus on Ball State. Okay, that's all in the past. Now they can talk a little bit about Texas as well. So in this special bonus episode, you're going to hear a little bit from Ohio State head coach Ryan Day, some of his post game comments, especially those focused on the offensive side of the ball. But yeah, you're going to get a little Texas at the end of this too. So we'll start with Jeremiah Smith. He got that long touchdown early to start the season, start the game, second drive of the game, long touchdown pass. Good start to the season for him. Good start to the season for the Buck Island. Was it sort of part of the plan to kind of get him in, get him his touches and then get him out so he could sort of rest up and stay healthy for Texas?

1:00As you can imagine, you know, when the game plans are being put together, I mean, he's very much in the front of Arthur and the offensive staff's mind. So not everything is designed that way. But I thought, you know, the game plan was suited to make sure he touched the ball and he did a great job making some plays and Julian did a good job of getting him the ball. And we decided to hold him in the second half, which, you know, for Jeremiah, you know, he understands, you know, what's coming here and he was great. You know, I think somebody who is a little bit more selfish or worried about different stats or anything like that would feel a certain way. And he was great. He's like, let the young guys play and, you know, put that decision in the coach's hands and trusted what we did. So we decided to hold him in the second half because he understands that, you know, we got a monster game here coming up. Well, the passing game was flying high early, the run game, not so much. It was not not great early, broken open or later in the game. The second half, it looked like a very different thing.

2:00So what went into that, both the bad and the first half and some of the good that you saw in the second? Yeah, coming into half time. I don't think anybody who said the run game looked great, but, you know, that's why you play a whole game of football and those first two drives in the second half. You know, we were able to hit some of those things, but we're going to get on a film and recognize the things that we, you know, did well, but in build confidence on that, because there was a lot in the scheme to build confidence on, but then the areas, excuse me, where, you know, we didn't do as good. And, you know, there was a couple things early on that, you know, they did movement wise that we finally got identified at our, our third and Tyler, that a good job of recognizing that at half making a few adjustments on some of the schemes and then the offensive line that did a really good job there as well. So we know that as the competition increases, you know, those things are going to get magnified. And that's what tomorrow is all about, but, you know, I mentioned it to the guys in a locker room. There'll be times when we enjoy this through the night and then wake up tomorrow and move on to the next opponent. Not this one, you know, the minute we leave the locker room, it's on a Texas.

3:01So what gave them about 15 minutes to enjoy in a locker room and then it's on a Texas, but we still need to get on the film and make those corrections. One thing that was very surprising to a number of us was that Luke Fahey was the first quarterback off the bench once Julian Sands work day was done. Obviously we knew and had been talking about for weeks now the fact that Luke Fahey and Tavian St. Clair were in a legitimate battle for that QB2 position. I think everyone sort of assumed that the default answer was going to be that Tavian St. Clair would sort of be that first guy off the bench because it was going to be a little bit newsworthy if Luke Fahey took that job. Well, and then Luke Fahey was the first guy off the bench. So where does that all stand after game one? I thought they both came in and played well. We were hoping to split the series with them and that's what happened. I think we were able to get a sample size and go from there and see where that goes. We decided to put Luke in first, but we'll continue to evaluate it and let those guys continue to work to get better.

4:03One of the guys who was one of the biggest stories of the spring, even before the spring started, and then one of the guys who was the biggest stories of Fall Camp, and then one of the guys who was the biggest stories of day one and game one of the season for the buck guys is legend Bay true freshman running back. He had some good. You saw that touchdown run on that reception at the end of the game and man, you saw all the stuff that we've been telling you about and all the stuff we've been hearing about. You saw that all on that one play, but also he returned two kickoffs. Both of them probably should not have returned. So you got some good. You got some bad. So what was legend Bay's day? What did Ryan Day have to think about that? The more disappointing thing is the second time it happened again. There are things that are going to happen as freshmen that I told Chris Henry, I think the first play maybe Jeremiah's career was a drop. And I said just keep playing through it, which he did. So it's good to see him get you that ball at the end.

5:04But what we can do is make the same mistake twice. Nobody felt worse than legend on that. But those are trust things that we're going to have to continue to work on to build trust within the coaches and the teammates and the team. But you can see the talent you can. And he's got a good attitude when it comes to being corrected. I think he has the right mindset when it comes to it. So we want to work with him to get better. And I think you obviously see what the talent is and certainly what he can do in the balls in his hand. It's his job to continue to work to get better, build discipline and trust in the coaching staff. And it's our job as coaches to find ways to utilize his talents. Guys like legend day, but also guys like Bo Jackson, guys like Jacobi Jackson, guys like Jeremiah Smith. Does Ryan Day find himself just saying wow during a game at what some of these guys can do? Yeah, there's definitely times for sure. But I also know what's coming down the road. And they're going to have teams that we play are going to have those type of players as

6:05well. And we're going to have to make those plays. But nonetheless, it's still good to build confidence and to see that, to see the connection with Julian and Jeremiah today, to see Bo break a tackle and then break another tackle, see the effort of Brock Boyd running down field. The block that Chris Henry had on that when you see the replay was excellent. That type of effort we can build on. So that's exciting to grow for. I thought the offense aligned that a great job on that play. But yeah, there's no quite. There are times where I say the talent in the player sometimes overcome some of the coaching that's kind of how that works. But we know in matchup games, that's not going to work. So as you watch it, you're always looking at it through that type of lens to make sure that we're doing what's right. That's going to translate to success down the road. Now I'm going to tell you the question in a minute. And then I want you to hear the answer. And I want you to listen to what you don't hear Ryan Day sort of answer in this one. So the question was, was it the plan to shuffle the offensive line in the first half? Because you saw at one point they pulled starting right tackle, Philip Daniels brought in

7:06Gabe Van Sickle at right guard and moved Austin, Servel from right guard to right tackle. And things had not been going great before then. So was that sort of the plan all along? Or was that something that was a result of what they saw on the field? And then sort of the second part of the question was about the conversations that they're having on the sidelines as they're on those iPads reviewing plays with the players. That is the flexibility that we have and the competition continues. And they're pushing each other. But that's typical of a normal game of going over and watching the iPad and trying to identify what's coming and the type of stunts that they're bringing in, how they're bringing it and some different things that in the first game you're going to see some things that maybe you hadn't seen before. So identifying what those are, making sure the communication is good and then trusting you're training. As we know, when you get into the stadium in the first game of the year, even like that first few plays in the first try, it was a little off. And then you see somebody come new come in the game and you see a couple things that are

8:08off. And that's why it was good to play this game before we went down to Texas. So, but I thought it was great to see them come out in the second half and rock off the ball the way that we've seen them all pretty season camp. Last one on this show, yeah, we're going to take a little bit of a look ahead to the Texas long horns, Ryan Day, sharing his first thoughts on Texas and the challenge ahead. Yeah, obviously a great opponent. They have really good talent across the board. So going down there is something that we've obviously been working towards all summer, looking forward to. They have a great program and a great team. So it's going to be a great environment, but this is what we're going to have to do this year. We're going to have to be able to go on the road and win games like this. So our preseason, our offseason was all designed around this. So it's here time to go prepare for these guys. All right.
