Council members push for the fix after hearing from locals about dark spots creating hazards. Senator Sonja Smith, who represents District 8, called it a key public safety step. She explained that brighter lights cut down on crime and make people feel secure, like if a driver needs to pull over at night. Meanwhile, Council President Mordine Alexander backed the effort and wants to spread the word to residents. She noted frequent complaints about poor lighting citywide and recent updates from transportation staff. According to officials with the Alabama Department of Transportation, talks with Birmingham continue. They're exploring more ways to boost lighting along interstate corridors.
