On March 25, North Carolina fired head basketball coach Hubert Davis this week after five seasons with a record of 125 wins and 54 losses. The Tar Heels bowed out early in the NCAA tournament last week, losing in the first round to VCU, which sealed his exit despite a strong runner-up, finished in his debut year. Billy Dottavan, current head coach of the NBA's Chicago Bulls, now tops the list of candidates to take over at UNC. ESPN reports he's expected to be a prime option for the Blue Blood program, drawing interest due to his deep college roots. Dottavan served as an assistant at Kentucky under Rick Patino from 1989 to 1994 and was a top name when John Calapari. Left for Arkansas back in April 2024. He passed on that job to stay with the Bulls, where he's coached since the 2020-2021 season without a playoff series win. Before jumping to the NBA, Dottavan built a power house at Florida over 19 seasons, winning back-to-back national titles in 2006 and 2007 with

a winning percentage above 70%. Other names in the mix for UNC include coaches like Tommy Lloyd from Arizona and Nate Oates from Alabama, though some carry steep buyout costs. Meanwhile, Dottavan just signed a contract extension with Chicago last summer, but the Bulls are on track for his worst record yet and another postseason miss. As UNC search heats up, a return to college ball could be on the horizon for the veteran coach.
