Self has faced heart-related health challenges lately, missing the 2023 tournament and a game against Colorado earlier this season. After a hospital stay in July 2025, it's not the first time he's brought up his future, but this felt more serious. Kansas has struggled to advance deep in the tournament, missing the second weekend for the fourth year in a row. They also haven't claimed a big 12 title since 2023, ending a long streak of dominance.
