Bibi, Einstein, and Conscious Opposition to Zionism

The Antedote

About this episode

We read from and discuss a portion of Benjamin Netanyahu's autobiography "Bibi: My Story" where Netanyahu describes his desire as Prime Minister to "expand international contacts beyond the traditional sphere of the United States and Western Europe," how that has been accomplished, and what it means. We then read from and discuss a letter published in the New York Times in December 1948 where Jewish liberals, including Albert Einstein and Hannah Arendt, denounce Zionist terrorism and the threat it posed on numerous fronts. We draw parallels between the similarity of rhetoric then and now, and how the situation has escalated in the decades since.

I mentioned that former President Jimmy Carter spoke of former Prime Minister Menachem Begin as a bigot and religious supremacist. I recall seeing that, but I can not find any links about it. Greg
