Ben Roberts-Smith arrested over alleged war crimes

Australia's most decorated soldier, Ben Roberts-Smith has been arrested and is expected to be charged with multiple war crimes following a five-year investigation.

The former SAS soldier and Victoria Cross recipient was taken into custody by investigators from the Office of the Special Investigator at Sydney domestic airport this morning.

Mr Roberts-Smith is expected to be charged with five counts of war crime murder relating to his time serving in Afghanistan between 2009 and 2012.

During an unsuccessful defamation case against Nine Newspapers, a Federal Court judge found there was "substantial truth" to allegations he killed four unarmed civilians in Afghanistan.

This is the first time he's faced criminal charges, which carry the maximum penalty of life imprisonment. 

Mr Roberts-Smith is expected to appear in court later today.

The Federal Government has chosen not to publicly condemn US President Donald Trump, for targeting Australia.

Mr Trump has again called out Australia over a perceived lack of support for his war with Israel against Iran.

In response, Federal Attorney-General Michelle Rowland has called for de-escalation in Iran.
