Bears' Safety Dilemma: Brisker or Byard?

The Chicago Bears are facing massive changes this offseason as they head into the 2026 season. They've already lost key players like Y receiver DJ Moore, Center Drew Daumann, and linebacker Tremaine Edmonds. All five saved these from last year free agents, along with others like Cornerback and the Sean Wright. Releasing Edmonds freed up $15 million in cap space, giving the team about $32 million to spin before any restructures. That extra cash means the Bears could bring back one or both starting safeties, Jacquan Briskar and Kevin Byard, if they choose. Earlier this week though, the safety market started heating up fast. The Los Angeles Rams resigned Cam Curl to a three-year deal worth $36 million, averaging $12 million a year. Carl stands out as a versatile star with top grades and run defense, tackling and coverage.

Other top free agents like Kansas City Chiefs, safety Brian Cook and Seattle Seahawks Cornerback, Kobe Bryant, might push for even higher deals. For the Bears, it impacts how much they'll pay to keep their own guys. Briskar excels against the run, but has coverage struggles in injury history, while Byard, running 33, led to league with 7, interceptions last year. Experts predict Briskar could land around $10 million or $11 million per year if he stays healthy, a solid value for his strengths. Byard might see $9 or $10 million annually, given his age, but proven ball skills. His veteran presence fits perfectly in defensive coordinator Dennis Allen's scheme, making him the top resigned target. With plenty of quality safeties and free agency and a deep 2026 draft class, the Bears have options. Patients could pay off, letting them build without overpaying amid all this turnover.
