The slur came from John Davidson, a Tourette's campaigner there for a film based on his life called I Swear. He shouted it involuntarily as a tick, and there were actually two such moments during the ceremony. Viewers expressed shock and hurt, with the backlash stealing attention from the film's big win its lead actor, Robert Aremile, to the best actor over. Stars like Timothy Chalamet and Leonardo DiCaprio. Outgoing BBC director General Tim Davie called it a genuine mistake in a letter to lawmakers, noting no one in the broadcast truck caught it on the live feed, so editors didn't cut it from the 7pm show.
