I don't know, 83 hours, 83 days, 83 weeks, 83 years. On Bam out of Iowa, it was 83 point performance at Kaseya Center, one of the best regular season games, obviously most memorable in Miami Heat history. It's a very short list. A lot of you, we pulled this. Have it as number one ahead of this is my house, ahead of the bronze 61, ahead of Dwayne's last game. The heat have had a lot of them. But this one obviously was different. Second, biggest point total by a player in NBA history. And the only one that anyone who was really alive to see. And we were in the building last night. And we're going to give you episodes related to that.

And Brady, before we get to our topic today, like a Brady Hawking following Brady Hawk 305, I think when Bam was at about 35 or something like that, I looked at you and said, wait, isn't that Eric Rubenstein next to the bench? He's everywhere. He's far as good. He is everywhere, man. It credits him that, I mean, maybe he's the reason. I don't know, maybe he said something to him in the first quarter and sparked it. I don't know. Well, he heard some stuff. So I actually did a podcast with him. We're going to post that one after this one. But I felt like this one is more pressing because the haters are back. They're back in full force. We love it. I've always wondered what hosting Five on the Floor would have been like during the big three era. I was covering it for newspapers and bleach report instead. I can't imagine all the podcasts we would have done and everything else we would have done for on SI at that time. That was fun. That's when the Miami Heat fan was constantly beating back the national media, which criticized everything related

5:28to the heat. And now here we are again. And the criticism is basically that band is not worthy. I mean, we're going to get into, we're going to get into the specifics of it. And that's why I brought you on because you did the thread about this today. But that's really what this is about. This is about people who are Kobe Bryant stands. And again, may he rest in peace? And he was a tremendous player. I got a chance to watch him live many times as well. It was an experience. And obviously people have very strong feelings about Kobe. I get it. Kobe scored 81 points in a game against the Toronto Raptors. That game was a little bit different than this particular game. People are using that to disparage what BAM did. Also the free throws, which increased as the game went on. I was one of only two reporters in there with Brian Keefe and the only one who asked a question of the Wizards coach about BAM. And he cut it off pretty quickly. But he said essentially that the game had become a forest of the fourth quarter. He didn't allow for follow-ups. He said, that's all I'm going to say about that.

6:28And so since I don't want to get kicked out of the room, I didn't follow. But essentially he ignored the fact that he made it a forest. So we'll talk about why and how that happened. And Eric Spulch is rolling this. But let's get to the big premise. But again, I think it's based on the fact that they don't think BAM is worthy. Just as people didn't think Dwayne was worthy of being a finals MVP in 2006, which is why 20 years later, it's still all about the free throws. Here we are again. Can you please go through the free throws, which obviously had a lot, right? I mean, a lot. He basically had like seven games worth of free throws for himself in one game in terms of attempts. But what actually happened here? Yes, there's all the time we see this where a narrative has started. People run with it compared to what actually happened. This by far might be the dumbest one I've ever seen. It's just not even real. I don't know where this started. First of all, last night wasn't real.

7:29It didn't feel real because it was just insane when we were watching the fact that it happened. But people that didn't even watch the game, maybe they turned in for the last five minutes, and they made their hypothesis and generalization of what just happened. They didn't watch the first quarter. They didn't watch the first three quarters because if you watch this entire game and 43 free throw attempts and NBA record for free throw attempts and free throw makes, that is crazy. I mean, that's something to mention. He was being fouled. Like this wasn't a case of like they wanted him to get to 80s so they were just calling stuff and they were mugging him. Like he was catching the ball and driving past these slower-footed bigs because he was faster and he could do it time and time again and those guys were fouling it. Then you get to the point of the game when they're sending a ton of help to him. This help that is the Washington Wizards defense is all small guards. What are you gonna do when six foot nine bams coming down the lane and laying everything up and dunking everything over the top

8:29of you, you're gonna swipe down and foul and which they did time and time again. Because of all these fouls, you're in the bonus with like five minutes left in the quarter. He doesn't have the bonus hands. The defense doesn't want him getting the ball because he is that good in this game. So they're holding him. It's a holding, a passenger appearance. Anything you want to call, it was that. And he's getting to the line not even touching the basketball. There was not one foul called in this game where I thought to myself, okay, well they gave him that was a good, that was a really good. Okay, so let me stop you on this because I know you're animated. You don't typically get this animated. So this has you really riled up and I get it. I understand it. And now I wonder what Brady Hawk would have been like during the big three era. When there were seven of these flare ups per day. Okay, whether it was crygate or cablegate. Chris Bosch, we literally spent two days debating the fact that Chris Bosch had a shoot around said he couldn't get the good cable in Toronto. And that's one of the reasons he was happy to be in Miami because he couldn't watch Game of Thrones from his hotel rooms. Okay, this is, we're back here.

9:29Okay, we are back here with Bumpgate and all the rest of this stuff. But Brian Keith last night, one of the things he said in response to my question was the fouling 40 feet away from the basket. Take me through that. Was there fouls 40 feet away from the basket that were not legitimate fouls? Well, if I think he might have been hit to the head is the heat fouling with the heat from the basket and doing that whole thing. Which might be very exciting. Which might rebuttal to this is, he had 77 at that point. Like we're discrediting him for the fouls in the final minute 40. Like the guy had 77 points. Like if you're, if you're, if we're gonna discredit the final four to six points this game because they were fouling up 20 to try to get the ball back. I mean, sure, but if you have that many points, you're gonna go for an NBA record. Like with that type of record, you're gonna go for that. Like there's no reason not to. Unless you're Mike McDaniel. I'm coaching NFL team. And we saw what happened to Mike McDaniel. Look, Karma didn't help him in that situation, right? They never scored 70 points again, total.

10:31And we know that he didn't want to kick a field goal at the end of that game to go for 73. Okay, so basically I think you're right. I think Keith was talking about Spowe's fouls, which people are, you know, some are annoyed about. I think the majority of observers think Spowe did the right thing by letting his team captain pursue a record. Where some of them think he crossed the line was that last couple of minutes where he did the intentional fouling. But I thought he was provoked to do that by the way that Washington was handling this. Which is, it's not just that he was scoring on everybody. This isn't like, like, Shaq playing against five feet guys. Okay, and holding the ball over them. I just don't think they wanted to be embarrassed with this kind of record against them, right? That's all this was, right? So there was a total kill-joice situation to use a word that Eric Spolstra or Rubenstein told me not only did Eric Spolstra use that word to the officials about the officials after the game, he used it to the officials during the game. Which I did not know until Eric told me that. But yeah, to me, they were being poor sports about this. Just like defend him straight up, right?

11:33Instead of fouling his teammates? So I'll be honest. If I was Washington, my life goal in that game would be a guard band on a bio and literally throw five defenders on him because if nobody else wants to score, like I totally get that. Like I would have won to be embarrassed. I wouldn't want an NBA record 83 points on my head. I mean, you hear the name Jalen Rose and the first thing you think of is 81. Like you don't want to be that guy, you don't want to be that team. So I was even thinking about it earlier in the game. I'm like, why are they leaving him even a little bit of space on the three-point line for some of those possessions? I was like, it makes no sense. Like they know that the heat are all in on this. Like they're trying to get him the ball. So that I get, like that triple teaming in at the end of the game, like I'm fine with that. Like that's the way you should play. I even said to you guys up there before it happened that I thought they were gonna intentionally start fouling other heat players at that point. So bam, didn't get it. Like I think they were all in on it. But if you're gonna do that, you can't be mad that bam is hunting his own thing. Like if you're trying to take it away, you can't be mad that bam's going for it.

12:33Like now we're playing, now this is, we're gonna be here all night. Like they're up 30 with two minutes left and we'll be here for 45 minutes if we have to because we'll just keep fouling back and forth. But yeah, at the end of the game, like the part that just makes no sense, like if you're really that mad about the four points that happened at the end of the game to get the record, like it's insane to me that you're discrediting the 79 before that. But again, like it's insane, like it's crazy. But the bigger narrative, I don't even mind that. Like that's whatever, that's just people complaining because you're either, after a historical moment, you're either on two sides, you're either appreciating greatness of what just happened. Because you're a normal human being, or you're trying to find just anything to discredit something. Right, because you're mad. Essentially, and that's where we are. And most people are miserable and this is what fuels social media, unfortunately. That's the state they were in. Look, if you don't want this to happen to you, don't suck. Don't suck. They got what they wanted. They were trying to lose. They were trying to lose. They gave it to you.

13:34So the fact that it came all came from one person, OK? The heat last night, this is going to get lost to history. This is going to get completely lost to history, just like the free throws will be, by the way. The heat went without four of their six best players. There were without four of their six best players. Like this wasn't a game that we talked about before the game. Bam had to carry. I did an episode with the turtle earlier that day about how bam is carried lately and you would need to carry more at night. Now do we predict 83 points? No, even a turtle did not predict that. So don't claim credit for that. But we said, this is on bam. He doesn't have the last two all-stars for the Miami Heat did not play last night, OK? Norm Powell and Tyler here are both of their scores. Yes, they're better when one of them doesn't play. But they're not better when both of them don't play. They also didn't have Andrew Wiggins, the former number one overall pick in the draft, who is one of their top five or six players and has been consistently throughout this entire season. And they didn't have Bam's backup who also has been his partner

14:36on the front line in Kaleilware. They had nowhere else to go. They had no backup center. No one. Because Sean Johnson was the backup center. I was like, they didn't even have a Yovic, OK? So you're talking about five guys they were counting on. At the start of the season, we're not playing. And the Wizards were still being embarrassed like little boys. Seriously, and so you're going to complain while you're bastardizing the game by tanking on purpose? I thought Trey was going to play last night, right? They shut down Anthony Davis as soon as they got him. All right, they're moving in a better direction. But for them to act, the Wizards, OK? It was just like the Jazz acting like this. The Wizards act like the Heat did something to damage the integrity of the game. Because their team captain was on fire for three quarters. And then they decided to push him over the end line because his teammates and his coach love him. I'm sorry. Like that is weak, weak, weak, weak, weak. And then for Brian Keith to say at the end of my question, which I wasn't even confrontational with him, I wasn't like this, OK?

15:36To say, that's all I'm saying about that. What else was there to say? There was one other reporter, one reporter, travel from Washington. You know why? Because they suck. That's a major market team. But they only travel one reporter. I'm not even sure that that was a reporter from the Washington Post, I don't think the Washington Post has reporters anymore. OK, that might have been a wizard team employee. And the question was about somebody who played who I'd never heard of, who did something and got some kind of playing time. And I'm like, we're at a game where somebody scored 83 points. And then after Keith took that question, he walked out. OK, that is an embarrassment to the game. The Wizards were an embarrassment to the game last night. Not the Heat, OK? It's the Heat just took advantage of a team that doesn't want to play by the same rules that the Heat do. And this is why one of the reasons why the Heat don't want to tank. They don't want to be that team. They don't want to be that team. They want to be the team that has the possibilities of doing something that happened the last night. Okay, so in your view, how many free throws should they have not had last night? You're saying zero, right? They're all all of them are legitimate, right? I'm saying zero, legitimately. If you go back through it, I am saying zero. Like they were, it's great. Like is that the time last night after the game?

20:40We were saying it, and I kept tweeting and like they were legitimate fouls. Like I didn't even know why that was even being brought up. When you go back through it, it's worse than you even think. Like they were legitimately like, like there was the funniest part is like the multiple, multiple fouls. You see the player go like this after the play. Like they're taking the foul. Like they are admitting that they fouled the player. And that's what's happening, possession after possession. Like they got to a point where they couldn't stop him around the rim because like a lot of these lineups are just smaller overall for Washington. That they had to foul him because he was going to lay it in or dunk it like every time. So they were going to make a murder, which is a good move by Washington. But the idea that he didn't earn these free throws, it's like they, there was a couple, he's like getting it off to rebound and they got him around the shoulders. Like they were just mugging the guy. And so like I don't even know, I think it's honestly, the way it should be looked at is it's impressive that this guy just set an NBA record for 43 free throws that were awarded. Like they couldn't stop him.

21:42So they had to foul him and set it to line 43 times. Like that should be the way it's looked at. But 100% like I'm so serious. Like they were legitimately, like they threw some different looks in. Like the bigs couldn't guard him. Like the guy who took the big off the bench was there was no chance he could stay in front of him. The game was blowing by him every time. Then they switched over, they finally, by the way, I, the first real adjustment I saw from Washington last night came when BAM at 57 with three minutes, like the third quarter. I don't think that goes that is the same. It sounds insane. Adjustment, okay? Cause they threw some relations talking down to people. Seriously, they threw some doubles at him. Like they threw like the natural occasional doubles. But like the first real adjustment, they said, okay, we're gonna try some different was with three minutes left. They decided to put champagne on BAM. Like they were like, okay, instead of putting me slurred for the bigs, that's the one that was with the heat, right? I want to say that was the heat. I always get them mixed up. Another one is like a regular with the spurs, is he not? Yeah, so I think, so he was familiar. I mean, he's probably guarded BAM practice before. But they knew that he was blown by the slurred for the bigs. So it's like, okay, let's put a guard on him.

22:43It's six foot six, wing slash guard. So BAM said, okay, I'm gonna put a shoulder into you. I'm gonna get into the pain. I'm gonna turn around. And every time because they're smaller than him, they're putting their hands up to try to, you know, try to get a contest, they're hitting him on the arm every time because he's being aggressive. And I look, and it's also funny full circle because this is what we always wanted from BAM. I mean, what we saw last night was like, put your head down and attack the mismatch when they're slower than you or attack the mismatch when they're smaller than you and you're stronger than them. Like he was hitting, just, he was a complete flow state. It was like, he had, Brady, did he not? Cause we were pointing this out as well. He had 77 points before he had his first assist, right? It was something crazy like that. Yeah. And then he had three straight assists. He had one two, it's gonna be a trivia question someday. He had one to Fontequio, who BAM and Fontequio first players ever took a bind for more than a hundred points since Wilt, right? So there you go, Wilt and whoever it was, that game, nobody has a record in that game. So it's really hard to know if it happened. But Drew Smith, Fontequio and I, I think the third one was, I think it was Hawkins.

23:43Yeah, it was Hawkins. Okay, so he had three assists at the end of the game. I thought he should have just kept going for a assist and just rack up an 80 point triple double against them cause he probably could have done that. But the way we're describing this is like, BAM was when beyond steroids. Like this is, it's, we watch BAM, who is a very good player, okay? No one has ever challenged and he's a very good player. He's a brilliant defensive player, okay? And has been throughout BAM and Spowe and you'll have a top five defense. There's a reason for that, right? He's just tremendous in all of those things. But offensively you're right. Like we have begged him to be more aggressive. He went through a stretch between mid-December and mid-January where he did not score 22 points in a game. And he had 22 points in this game. What was it, like six minutes in? Yeah. He went through a stretch. He did not get over that at all. And I'll go to you to close on this because I mean, I think we've, we've settled the case although I don't think that Tim McMahon or some of the others who are making these kind of statements

24:45today have watched a minute of that game. At least Winhorse and some others have stepped up a little bit in defense of BAM. I don't know why the BAM has to be defended today. But that's, again, that's where we are. But where does this go now? I guess because like people aren't expecting this from BAM every night and maybe not 83 points. But he has a four of nine game where he's three of four from the line for 11 points because we know one of those is coming, right? Like this is not a permanent turn the corner situation. It's going to give him confidence and then give them more confidence in him. And I love seeing how the players responded in last night. And that's because him is a person, not him as a player. He's earned that because the way he treats people and what he is in the community and what he is as a captain. But like, what happens now? Like is he, he's at 20 points even on the season now. It took him an 83 point game to get to 20. So he's not that far behind Powell and Hero. Is he going to start leading the Heat and Scoring or are we going back to him being the third or fourth option?

25:47An honest, the realistic answer is it's, this was a one game thing and we're going to get back to regular scheduled programming. It's kind of the overall thing. I think the part that I think you take away from this is because you know, building off something like this. Like I, like in terms of like a game plan, but there is something about building off something confidence wise because I've said this for years and it sounds cliche, but BAM is a confidence player. We saw it earlier in the year. Like when you bring up those stretch of games where he couldn't get to 20 points, it was because his confidence was shot. He was like hesitating on jumpers. He was just, and we saw it earlier in his career when Brooke Lopez would stand under the rim and dare him to shoot and he was reluctant and he couldn't figure it out. But then we've seen these stretches multiple times where he gets in this mode where he just can't be stopped. And the shot looks great, the inside scoring, he's aggressive. He's a confidence player. So I think what you can see after this is, that's a whole lot of confidence that you can build out for a guy that just scored 83 in a game. Like there's no way not to be confident. So there should be a little bit more aggression.

26:48There should be a little bit more willingness to do some of the stuff he was doing in this specific game of attacking certain mismatches and everything. No, like this is, this was a one game thing. They're gonna get back to Tyler doing a lot of the heavy lifting offensively and the role player stepping up and norm coming back eventually. But I think this is not gonna like flip into, the only thing it's changing is the points for games going up a little bit from this game alone. But other than that, like I don't know, I get realistically the overall answer is, I think it's gonna be pretty much the same old thing but I think you could see a better version of Bams' confidence loss. Poor Tyler. Poor Tyler. Tyler's gonna come back and he's gonna take 23 shots. He's gonna make a lot of them because he has been making a lot of him. He's shooting 50% from the field. He's been one of the most efficient players in the league since he's come back. But everybody's gonna be pissed with every shot. Bams doesn't take now. If Bams has a bad game, it's gonna be all Tyler's fault. Don't you think so? That's always where this goes, always. It does always end up with him in the blame, but this specific stretch, Tyler's been so good

27:49about not overly chucking, like he hasn't been in this mode where it's been about himself. He has been really good about getting off the ball, getting others. I think he would thrive if Bams took over this role of like being a dominant on ball player. And I think he would not only want that to happen, but I think it would benefit him because it would free him up to the core. Like now you can run these handoffs in two main game and that's a tough combo to deal with. Their teams are worried about Bams' that extent. So I think it would help him, but yeah, he's ultimately always gonna get the blame by the end of it if things go south, but I don't see it happening to that extent in just chucking and coming back. And Bams not taking his main shot because he has been very good post-all server in terms of where he's been, you know, his shot profiling, getting off the ball. I think there's a chance that Bams slips into third team all NBA now. What we'll see, he may have been too far out of this matter. Narratives matter. Narratives matter and there is, so definitely what's crazy is, this is the stupidest thing when we used to talk about this all the time with all defense and defense player in the year. Bams having this explosive offensive game

28:50will help his candidacy for not maybe defensive player in the year because I think that's Wembee for sure, but for all defensive team. I bet you he gets on it now. And I don't know that he was gonna get on it. He was building that way and the heat were pushing it now, but because he scored 83 in a game, people say he's better on defense because that's just how it is.
