Bald Eagle Spotted in Birmingham, First in Years

This marked the first sighting in the city since January 2024, according to E-Bird Records. Local naturalists Van Coffee discovered the bird flying down Valley Drive. It was being chased by a group of crows before landing in a nearby tree. Coffee grabbed his zoom lens camera from his car to snap some photos. People in the area were thrilled by the rare urban visit from America's national symbol. Neighbors stopped traffic just to watch its soar overhead. Bald eagles have nested for years at spots like Lake Purdy in North Shelby County. They vanished from Alabama until recovery efforts in the 1980s brought them back strong.
