Author Thomas King reveals he's not Indigenous, despite believing so
About this episode
Author Thomas King has revealed that he has no Indigenous ancestry, despite having identified as part-Cherokee for most of his life based on family lore. The acclaimed writer, who built a significant career around Indigenous themes and perspectives, shared the information in a recent op-ed for The Globe and Mail. Prompted by persistent rumours, King this year contacted the Tribal Alliance Against Frauds (TAAF), an American organization that investigates false claims of Indigenous heritage. A genealogist working with TAAF found no evidence of Cherokee or any other Indigenous ancestry in his lineage.
