Auburn's Foundry: A $282M Mixed-Use Development

0:00From the streets of Birmingham to the world, this is Birmingham News Today. Auburn City leaders are moving forward with a massive 282-acre mixed-use development called the Foundry. Developed by Warren Jolly, it could take up to 20 years to fully build out, but it promises to bring much-needed housing and infrastructure to the area. This marks the city's first planned unit development, or PUD, in its history. The project sits north of Shubb Jordan Parkway and west of North College Street. Plans call for apartments, single-family homes, 275,000 square feet of commercial space, 60,000 square feet of. It's office space, and 114 acres of open space, including a greenway. Mayor Ron Anders Jr. highlighted months of planning and meetings behind the scenes. Earlier this month, it cleared key hurdles with the city council, though final approval is still needed. A big part of the deal involves extending Yarborough Farms Boulevard to connect Donahue Drive with North College Street at the Kerry Creek intersection.

1:05The city and developer will split the roughly $8 million construction cost right down the middle. Meanwhile, Auburn just ranked fourth in the nation for homeownership growth over the past decade.
