Asylum Seeker Sentenced for Hotel Arson

0:00On April 28th, a 37-year-old Iraqi asylum-seeker named Rawan Abdul Rahman just got hit with an eight-and-a-half-year prison sentence for. Torching two hotels were migrants for staying. He did it because he hated the conditions and wanted better digs, straight up endangering lies in the process. The first blaze hit the Phoenix Hotel in North-Wield, Essex, back on March 28th last year. Flames ripped through an entire wing, forcing terrified residents, including kids, to evacuate. Just eight days later, on April 5th, he struck again at the Bell Hotel in nearby Epping, setting mattresses on fire in his shared room. Damage was massive hundreds of thousands of pounds at the Phoenix, around 40,000 at the Bell Hall, on the taxpayers' dime. No one died thanks to quick staff moving the alarms and getting folks out, but investigators said fatalities were a real risk with how fast those. Fires spread. Abdul Rahman had already been denied asylum in Sweden, before landing in the UK, where he couldn't work and felt stuck in limbo.

He's got three more years on license after serving two-thirds, and deportations likely on the horizon. Officials are clear, no one's above the law when it comes to this kind of reckless danger.
