The family of Molly Tyshurst, who was murdered by her abusive ex-boyfriend

at her home in Forbes in Central Western New South Wales in 2014,

has come face-to-face with her killer in a courtroom.

Molly's father, Tony Tyshurst, described his 28-year-old daughter

as big-hearted and deeply loved, his best friend and confidant.

When she died, part of me died with her.

He told the first day of Daniel Billings' sentence hearing

in the New South Wales Supreme Court in Orange.

Tyshurst murder intensified a national campaign against gendered violence

and led to legal changes in New South Wales,

including tighter bail laws for people accused of domestic violence.

Sydney's recorded its second suspected mistaken identity

killing in 24 hours, with a feud between two rival crime networks

now suspected to be behind both attacks.

A man in his 40s was gunned down outside of Marylands West home

on Wednesday afternoon, shot from a passing car while working there

with a resident and two young children who were inside at the time.

The homeowners were well-known to police for organised crime links,

but the victim was not.

It came a day after 23-year-old university student Marco Tapia

was shot dead in his Glen Alpine bedroom by multiple attackers

who were still on the run.

Police are now investigating whether the two shootings are connected.

Acting Premier Prue Car insists police are on top of the violence

with a task force commander revealing 60 officers

are patrolling targeted areas around the clock.

But opposition leader Kelly Sloan says the fear is real,

telling reporters Sydney doesn't feel safe anymore.

A three-year-old Victorian girl has died after contracting a rare infection

at a petting zoo following six weeks fighting for life in intensive care.

The little girl was being treated at Monash Children's Hospital

for a rare life-threatening illness that can cause kidney and brain damage

triggered by a toxin-producing bacteria commonly found in animals like cows.

It's believed she was exposed during a visit to a petting zoo

with another child also hospitalised after attending a birthday party

at the same venue.

Victoria's Health Department launched an investigation into the outbreak last month.

Australia's defence spending is under the microscope

with the US pushing us to spend even more.

Defence Minister Richard Miles was in Washington this week

meeting with the Trump administration as the two countries marked 75 years

of their military alliance.

The message from the US side was blunt,

American and Australian military capabilities need to match each other.

It's all tied to the ongoing pressure around Orcas.

That's the security pact that promises Australia nuclear-powered submarines.

Miles says Australia's defence budget has already had its biggest peace time boost

now sitting at 2.8% of GDP ahead of most NATO countries.

But the deal itself is already copying scrutiny.

A public inquiry has heard Australia should have stuck with the original French submarine contract

with one former Navy officer saying the Orcas plan was cooked up in a coffee shop

by political staffers not submarine experts.
